Abstract
Highly chlorinated solid paraffins are manufactured from a paraffin hydrocarbon containing 18 to 70 carbon atoms or a mixture of more than such hydrocarbon by chlorination with gaseous chlorine, wherein the paraffin or paraffin mixture is prechlorinated in the melt to a chlorine content of about 40% to 65% by weight, and then further chlorinated under a pressure within the range of 0.5 atmosphere gauge to 20 atmospheres gauge to a chlorine content of up to 75% by weight, the gaseous mixture above the liquid reaction mixture in the further chlorination stage being uniformly released from pressure at a rate slow enough to ensure a degree of conversion of the chlorine of at least 40%, while simultaneously introducing into the liquid reaction mixture an amount of chlorine required for maintaining the pressure in the gaseous phase within the aforesaid range.
