Abstract
Beams are formed on each side of an electronically scanned lens by feed system means energizing sets of radiating elements which are disposed on each face of the lens, and which are connected by an array of phase shifters. As described, an aerial system includes a transmission type lens 2, Fig. 3, having large numbers of radiating elements 4, 5 on opposite faces 6, 7, pairs of said elements being connected together through reciprocal or non-reciprocal type phase shifters 3. A horn 8 feeds the elements 5, so that a beam 10 is radiated by the elements 4. Similarly, a horn 9 feeds the elements 4, so that a beam 11 is radiated by the elements 5. Drivers 14 controlled by a computer 15 adjust the settings of the phase shifters 3, and the spherical wave fronts from the horns 8, 9 are converted to provide steerable radiated phase fronts which may be planar or, for specially shaped beams, non-planar. A transmitter 16 and a receiver 17 are coupled through a duplexer 18. The horns 8, 9, Fig. 5, may be off-set to reduce aperture blocking. Two systems may be provided which are placed one above the other and at right angles, so that 360 degrees azimuthal coverage is obtained although each side of each lens scans over only 45 degrees. In another embodiment the feed horns (208), (209), Fig. 7 (not shown), are polarized, and polarized reflectors (219), (220) are provided on the faces of the lens, each of which reflects the phase front from the opposite horn but passes that from the adjacent horn. Thus, beams (210), (211) are formed on the same sides of the lens as their generating feed horns (208), (209). Reciprocal type phase shifters (203) must be used.
