Abstract

A hydrodynamic coupling comprises a driven part which has rolling members 23a, Fig. 2, arranged in centrifugally movable blocks 23, whereby when a determined speed is obtained the rolling members engage an annular member 14a on a driving part and, provided that the torque is insufficient to overcome the friction between the rolling members and their seats are clamped in their seats by friction to provide a direct clutching action, but if the torque exceeds the frictional forces are rotatable in their seats. The driving shaft 1 drives an impeller 11 and a friction disc 14 having the annular portion 14a. The turbine 13 has friction blocks 23 arranged in seatings formed by annular projection 20, Fig. 2, radial fins 21 and element 24, each friction block mounting two rollers 23a in seatings 23b. The casing has fluid filling holes 26 or 27. When the speed transmitted through the hydraulic coupling reaches the predetermined value the blocks carrying rollers 23a move outwardly to engage the latter against the cylindrical portion 14a to transmit a direct drive, the rollers 23a being held by friction in the respective seats 23b. If the resisting torque is too high the rollers may rotate around their axes and slide over the portion 14a. The rollers 23a may be replaced by balls.
