Abstract
A soap is derived from fatty acids comprising tallow fatty acids and synthetic fatty acids, of which from 5 to 30 per cent by weight of the total fatty acids are C 11 -C 15 branched-chain synthetic fatty acids (other than solely alphamethyl tetradecanoic acid). Preferably at least 10% of the fatty acids are branched chain, a major proportion of the fatty acids are tallow fatty acids and the synthetic acids contain at least 40% of branched-chain fatty acids. The synthetic fatty acids may be prepared by the oxidation of fatty alcohols produced by the catalytic reaction of olefins with carbon monoxide and hydrogen or the acids may be obtained by catalytically reacting olefins with carbon monoxide and water. In one embodiment of the invention, the synthetic fatty acids are substantially wholly branched-chain acids. The soap may be in tablet, powder or liquid form and may contain conventional additives (e.g. titanium dioxide and preservatives).
