Abstract

Carboxylic acid (1,2,4-thiadiazolyl-5)-amides of formula in which R is alkyl, haloalkyl, or alkoxy all of 1-4 C atoms or phenoxy and R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl with 1-3 C atoms, alkylmercapto with 1-4 C atoms or aryl are prepared by reacting (a) in the presence of an acid binder a carboxylic acid halide of formula R-CO-hal, or (b) an acid anhydride of formula with a 5-amino-thiadiazole of formula The reaction may be carried out at 20 to 120 C. in the presence of the inert solvent or when the acid anhydride is used in the presence of excess thereof the acid binder may be an alkali metal hydroxide, or carbonate or a tertiary amine. The amides may be used as herbicides.
