Abstract

An apparatus for producing chlorine from brine by electrolysis using a mercury cathode comprises an electrolytic cell 1 a denuding tower 8 a mercury pump 20 a main circulation system for mercury completely sealed against the atmosphere including a passageway 3, 6 for conducting mercury amalgam from the cell to the tower, a passageway 19 for denuded mercury to the pump, pipes 22, 32 for conducting the mercury back to the cell, e.g. via a mercury separation passageway 33 where mercury butter, graphite particles and wash water overflow a weir 34 and flow through return pipe 35 to the tower separation means outside the system (viz passageway 3, 6) for removing contaminants from the mercury amalgam and means in the main system for preventing backflow of mercury when pump stops, e.g. an automatically operating valve (28), (Fig.4) in an elevated part 23 of the system which communicates by a side pipe 25 to the tower. The contaminants such as mercury butter, together with some amalgam and brine, may flow over a weir 11 in the downstream end of the passageway 3 into a mercury overflow sump 12 to be conducted into a contaminant separation vessel 14 where amalgam is separated and sent along a path 15 to the tower. The mercury amalgam may flow between parallel and contiguous passageways 3, 6 through a gap under a common side wall 5 as described in Specification 1, 205, 778.
