Abstract
The magnitude and direction of the wind is determined from the electrical output signals of three members Z, E, N (Fig. 1) rotated by the wind. In the embodiment described, as three propellers rotate, light is transmitted via apertured discs on the propeller shaft to photo-cells, the outputs from which are connected to a coding device 2 which determines the direction of rotation. For each propeller a pulse train on one of two leads is fed to (1) a station 8 which computes the average windspeed (2) a digital/ analogue converter 9 connected to a dial (3) a digital/analogue converter 13 (4) magnetic digital recorders 5, 6 the outputs from which are read into gated counters 11 and (5) a gated counter 12, the output from which in binary coded decimal form is fed to a printer or computer. The outputs of converter 13 corresponding to the horizontal components of the wind are fed to a cathode tube 14 having a reticle so that the horizontal speed and direction may be read directly, this signal being recorded on photographic film. The converter 13 also feeds (1) threshold circuits 16 triggering alarms when the analogue signal exceeds a threshold, and (2) analogue computer 17 and recorder 18.
