Abstract
In a tube-within-a-tube shock absorber, Fig. 1, the upper closure 23 of the outer tube 32 has a recess containing a seal 11 the upper closure of the inner tube 33 is a disc 27 and a washer is located between the disc and the seal. Fig. 2 shows the form of the seal and washer: the seal has two oppositely directed conical lips which "wipe" the piston-rod in respectively opposite directions of rod movement the inner diameter of the washer 28a is such that at least the tip of the lowermost seal is unsupported. The outer diameter of the seal, in its uninstalled state exceeds the diameter of the recess 25 in the closure member 23, so that the seal is a force fit in the recess. Fig. 9 shows an alternative construction of seal, leaving one upwardly-facing and three downwardly-facing conical lips their dimensions being such that r14<r13<r12<r11<r4<r1. In Fig. 1, 37 is a resilient stop: other features of the shock absorber are apparent from Fig. 1. Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown) depict in more detail the form of the piston 2 and foot valve 35.
