Abstract
Coating apparatus comprises a stationary member having a curved surface provided with a longitudinal cavity creating a fluid-holding pocket on said surface under a web fed thereover, means for introducing coating fluid to said cavity, and means for removing excess coating fluid from said cavity. As shown, a fixed cylindrical tubular member 11 is provided with a fixed internal partition 22, and liquid coating medium, delivered under pressure through an opening 23 to one interior chamber 20 thus formed, passes to the outer surface of member 11 via a line of apertures 13. A line of apertures 14 connects the outer surface of member 11 with the other internal chamber 21. A web 10 passes over apertures 14, 15 and over a wire-wound driven roller 12 journalled at 'the surface of member 11 on the outer side of the apertures 13. Web 10 is biased against the .surfaces of member 11 and roller 12 by a leaf spring 26. The coating medium issuing from apertures 13 forms a pocket 15 of liquid between roller 12, the -outer surface of member 11, and the 'under surface of web 10 travelling towards roller 12. The web thus coated passes over the latter and the excess liquid passes through apertures 14 into chamber 21, to escape therefrom, for re-circulation, through an opening 24. The web initially passes over a roller 29 carried' by an arm 34 axially adjustable for varying the angle of approach of web 10 to member 11, In a modification apertures 13 are replaced by a continuous slot the width of which may be varied by turning a screw connecting the outer wall of chamber 20 diametrically with portion 22. In a further modification, roller 12 is replaced by a fixed ridge.
