Abstract

In a method of making a ceramic article, e.g. a tube, finely divided particles of ceramic material are mixed in a liquid to form a slurry which is forced into a mould and heated to gel. The apparatus comprises a mixer tank 10 in which water, colloidal silica and ice are mixed before being transferred to a tank 16 which is connected to a vacuum pipe 28 whereby air bubbles are removed from the slurry. Air under pressure is supplied to the tank 16 to force the slurry through a hose 22 which is connected to the bottom of the mould 40 in which a tubular core is located. The air vibrator 46 operates during mould filling. Hot water is circulated through the mould core and a central return pipe 126, Fig. 3, to cause the colloidal silica to gel. Cold water is then circulated through the core and return pipe to cause the aluminium core to shrink away from the moulded tube. The mould and the tube are then lifted away from the core and located in a dryer and the resulting expansion of the mould permits easy removal of the tube from the mould. The top and bottom of the mould are attached by bayonet connections.
