Abstract
A telescopic umbrella frame comprising three part spokes 6, 7 and 8, a stick in at least three parts 1, 2 and 3, a main slider 12 mounted on the stick, main struts 13 having one end pivoted to a spoke and the other end pivoted to the main slider, a handle 5 inside which the enlarged ends 35 of the spokes are held during extension of the frame and a catch 'between each middle spoke part and each outer spoke part has middle spoke parts 7 of U-shaped crosssection and outer spoke parts 8 sliding within the middle spoke parts with a clearance which allows each outer spoke part to tilt within its middle part, the catch between these parts being formed by a crooked head 21 (shown much enlarged in Fig. 4) on the outer spoke part, having a nose 22 which, when the frame is extended engages in a hole 23 through the wall of the middle spoke part to lock the parts together and is held in engagement by a further part 24 and 25 of the crooked head, which projects outwards from the U-shaped middle part and is held in position to prevent tilting of the outer spoke part within the middle spoke part by a ring 26 slidable against the action of a spring 27 along the middle spoke part, the ring being movable against its spring by the inner spoke part on telescoping the frame, to release the further part of the head 24 and 25, thus allowing the outer spoke 8 to tilt within the middle spoke 7 to release nose 22 from its hole and allow the outer spoke to be telescoped into the middle spoke. To effect the extension of the ribs, the outer ends of the spokes 8 are constructed with spherical ends 35, and the handle terminates in a metal cap 37 having an annular constriction 41, which serves to lock the ends of the spokes in position by the action of a spring-actuated locking ring, so that, when the stick is extended, the spoke parts are automatically extended and engaged in the locked position, whereupon the locking ring is disengaged against the action of the spring by means of levers actuated by a button in the end of the handle and the spoke ends are then released from the grip and the umbrella stick may be fully extended. The handle is suitably fitted with an extension sleeve 47 which is partially supported by an axially slidable disc held in position by a conical spring surrounding the stick when the umbrella is extended, but which is pushed inwardly towards the cap 37, against the pressure of the spring by the end 51 of the middle stick part 2, when the umbrella is shortened.
