Abstract
A low-pressure mercury vapour lamp stated to give rise to reduced interference radiation, includes two thermionic electrodes, each of which consists of a support coated with a mixture which includes an electron emission material consisting of at least one alkaline earth metal oxide and a boride of a metal of the lanthanide or actinide series or of the second, fourth, fifth or seventh groups of the Periodic Table, the quantity of boride lying in the range 0À1 to 15%-and preferably in the range of 0À1 to 7%-by weight of the alkaline earth metal oxide. The borides of Ca, La, Ce, Pr, Sm, U, Zr, V, Ta and Mn are specifically referred to, the grain size of the boride particles being not greater than 30, and preferably less than 15, the mean grain size of the electron emissive particles. The mixture may additionally include zirconium in amount 1 to 5% by weight of the electronic emissive material. A mixture of the boride, zirconium and an 8 : 5 : 7 mixture of barium, calcium and strontium carbonates may be coated on a tungsten wire support which is subsequently heated to decompose the carbonates to oxides. Examples of compositions are given.
