Abstract

A substrate is covered with a layer based on bitumen reinforced with threads comprised of synthetic linear polycondensation products, which threads have been subjected to a pretreatment with montan resin to promote adhesion between the threads and the bitumen. The substrate may be a road or a tile. Organic materials such as wood flour and cork flour all organic fillers may be mixed with the bitumen-based material. The term "linear polycondensation products" is stated to mean the polyamides obtained from lactams, from diamines and dicarboxylic acids, and the polyesters prepared from terephthalic acid or the ester-forming derivatives thereof, and glycols e.g. polyethylene terephthalate. The threads may be in the form of fibres which are mixed with the bitumen before forming into the covering layers. The threads may also be used in the form of woven or knitted fabrics or bonded or non-bonded fibre sheets, preferably woven fabrics made of filament yarns. The threads may be mixed with threads of a different material e.g. glass, cotton, or regenerated cellulose. The woven fabrics can be kept under pretension whilst being incorporated into the bitumen. The montan resin may be separated from montan wax by extraction. Montan resin mixtures may also be used. The threads may be impregnated or sprayed with a solution or dispersion of the montan resin before or after processing into woven fabrics. In the examples, (1) a tile made from a mixture of sand, a filler, gravel and a bitumen was coated with an asphalt emulsion. When the emulsion had broken a polyethylene terpehthalate woven fabric charged with montan was clamped on the tile and another layer of asphalt emulsion applied (2) a tile was treated as in 1) except that the fabric consisted of a polyamide derived from polycaprolactam (3) to produce a reinforced road surface a foundation layer of gravel, sand, filler and asphalt bitumen was formed on a sub-layer of compacted sand. An adhesive layer of an anionic asphalt emulsion was provided on the foundation layer and over this a fabric as in 1) which was charged with montan resin was unrolled. This fabric was stretched and pinned down and another coating of an asphalt emulsion sprayed onto the fabric. After the asphalt emulsion had broken, two asphalt layers were successively provided and rolled. Another layer of anionic asphalt emulsion was applied and a binder layer consisting of broken stone, sand, filler and asphalt bitumen rolled onto these layers. The binder layer was given an adhesive layer prepared from an asphalt emulsion, and a second fabric identical with the first was attached and covered with asphalt emulsion. After the emulsion had broken a top layer consisting of broken stone, filler, and asphalt bitumen was applied.
