Abstract

A process for the hydrogenative conversion of a hydrocarbon oil containing nitrogen compounds and optionally sulphur compounds comprises contacting the oil with a catalyst in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure, cooling the reaction product in at least two steps partially to condense it, separating the partially condensed product into a gas mixture and a liquid hydrocarbon mixture and water, stripping the liquid hydrocarbon mixture with steam, condensing the steam after the stripping, mixing the water separated from the gas mixture and the hydrocarbon mixture with the water formed from the steam originating from the stripping of the hydrocarbon mixture, discharging part of the combined water and injecting another part of the combined water into the reaction product between the steps in which the latter is cooled. The process is applicable to hydrodesulphurization (e.g. with Co-Mo-Al2O3 catalyst), or hydrocracking.
