Abstract
A continuous copolymerization process in a constant state to form a polymer, randomly improving the viscosity index, for lubricating oil, characterized in that it comprises: feeding to a reaction zone, on a constant average, at least two aliphatic alpha-olefinic monomers M1 and M2, of which M1 have the smallest number of carbon atoms, while M1 and M2 contain together at least 6 already sums 11 carbon atoms, and in the case of polymers of more than 2 monomers, the subsequent aliphatic alpha-olefin monomer M3, other than M1 and M2, containing at least as many carbon atoms as M2; and the monomers being chosen exclusively between and in the case of polymers derived from 2 monomers; - feed a diluent to said reaction zone, at a constant average; - feeding a stereospecific catalyst to said reaction zone, at a constant average; - maintaining in said reaction zone a pressure between approximately 100 and 1000 psig and a temperature between about 50º C and about 120º C, in order to copolymerize said monomers until a conversion (c) of 20 to 90% by weight of M1 is obtained, the composition being of the feeding of said monomers, the temperature inºC (t) and the inter-related conversion (c) according to the formula ** (See formula) ** with the proviso that b1 <= X <= bh, where X represents the percentage weight with respect to the total weight of the monomer feed, while cyt is the conversion and temperature and a1, ah, b1 and bh are chosen from the following values : (see graphic) the amount of M3 in the feed being from 0 to 15% by weight with respect to the total weight of the monomers fed, while constituting the rest of the composition of the feed; and continuously extracting unreacted polymer and monomer from the reaction zone, with an average such that a mass balance is maintained between the fed monomer and the monomer and polymer extracted from said zone; - deactivating the catalyst and, if necessary, further processing the polymer in solution, to reduce the average molecular weight of viscosity to the level of 200,000 to 1,000,000 and to extract the insoluble material in n-heptane at 60º C in excess of 0.5% by weight of the total weight, of polymer.
