A method for separating a heavy component of relatively low volatility and a relatively high light component of volatility from a mixture comprising said components, including subjecting the mixture to an extractive distillation with a relatively non-volatile solvent having a higher affinity for said a heavy component for said light component, recover from said extractive distillation a vapor stream of light component substantially free of heavy component and a liquid stream of a heavy component solution substantially free of light component in said solvent, using said liquid stream to form feed liquid for a rectification and recover from said rectification a second vapor stream of heavy component substantially free of solvent and a second stream of solvent liquid substantially free of heavy component that is recycled to said extractive distillation, characterized in that the extractive distillation is carried out in at least two zones of different pressure, maintaining the zone or zones that have the highest average concentration of light component at an average pressure that is higher than the average pressure of the zone or areas that have a lower average concentration in the light component.
