A process for the production of cyclohexane by hydrogenation of benzene, which contains no more than one part per thousand, expressed as an element, of combined or uncombined sulfur, characterized in that it consists of hydrogenating benzene in two stages, the first of which is cooled and the second is not cooled, being made not less than 90 weight percent and not more than 99 weight percent of the conversion to cyclohexane in the first stage, and the hydrogenation reaction being substantially totalized in the second stage, using both catalytic stages consisting essentially of nickel supported in sepiolite.
