Abstract

Supporting tabs 271, Fig. 7, defined by cuts (40), (41), Fig. 9 (not shown), in downwardly converging walls 21-24 of a container formed from a single blank, are pushed out to leave apertures in these walls in which articles are accommodated, the tabs being so arranged as to be in contact with the adjacent walls 29, 30 and 32. The carton is folded up from the blank of Fig. 9 (not shown), the inner wall 32 being formed from an extension of the base panel 31. Apertures 28 are formed in the horizontal panels 27 through which the bottoms of the articles can protrude. Inspection holes may also be provided in the side walls 29, 30. The whole container may be wrapped in transparent material or adhesive strips 35 may be provided across the top to ensure that the carton stays erect. The bottom panel 34 or (34a), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be extended under the bottom panel (31a) and round the carton to form a cover (37) which is locked into the side wall (30a) by a tongue and slot (38). The central wall 32 or (32a) may also be extended through a longitudinal slit in the fold (33a) and the cover (37) to form a handle (39) or the carton, Fig. 6 (not shown). This handle or alternatively, protruding tabs, may be used to facilitate stacking of the erected cartons by making corresponding longitudinal slits in the base of each carton. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a carton for one row of articles is folded up from the blank of Fig. 3 (not shown), in a similar manner. The bottom panels (7), (8) are interlocked by the tabs (15), (16) or by tongues and slots. Alternatively the bottom panel (7) can extend over the whole width of the bottom and be fastened to the side wall (4), the bottom panel (8) being omitted. Perforations 43, Fig. 7, may be provided across the carton so that the container may be adapted to an arbitrary number of articles.
