Abstract

n-Hexadecyl and n-octadecyl tri-n-butyl ammonium bromides are prepared by reacting tri-n-butylamine with n-hexadecyl bromide and n-octadecyl bromide respectively. The above quaternary bromides may be converted to the corresponding hydroxides by treatment with silver oxide and the latter may be further converted to the corresponding quaternary chlorides by reaction with hydrochloric acid.ALSO:Synthetic plastics such as polythene or polystyrene are rendered antistatic by washing with aqueous solutions of a quaternary of the formula R(butyl)3NX, wherein R represents a C14-22 alkyl group and X represents an anion such as halide, sulphate or nitrate. The aqueous treatment solution may be formed by dissolving in water a mixture of a minor amount of the above quaternary compound with a urea or sodium sulphate diluent.ALSO:Nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or other textile fabrics are rendered antistatic by washing with aqueous solutions of a quaternary compound of the formula R(butyl)3NX, wherein R represents a C14-22 alkyl group and X represents an anion such as halide, sulphate or nitrate. The above treatment is preferably conducted as a final rinse after laundering and may be applied simultaneously with softening and whitening agent treatments. The aqueous treatment solution may be formed by dissolving in water a mixture of a minor amount of the above quaternary compound with a urea or sodium sulphate diluent, or by dissolving in water a fused mixture of the above quaternary compound, a bis-(hydrogenated tallow alkyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride and an optical brightening agent (e.g. a pyrazoline-type brightening agent).
