Abstract
In a PAL colour television receiver. Fig. 4, in which the subcarrier I and Q components are separated by means of an arrangement comprising a one-line duration delay line 3, a 180 degree phase shifter 15 and adding stages 4-16, the constant phase sub-carrier synchronizing " bursts " cancel at the output of stage 16 but add at the output of stage 4 to produce " bursts " 7 of double amplitude, each formed by the addition of two consecutive input pulses. The noise cancelling characteristics of the system are discussed with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown). The " bursts " are separated from the Q signal by gate 5 and applied to synchronize sub-carrier oscillator 9 from which suitably phased signals pass to the I and Q demodulators 24 and 20. The I and Q signals are also applied to full-wave rectifier circuits 28 and 27, with the rectifiers in one circuit reversed with respect to those in the other, to derive a signal of fixed phase at twice subcarrier frequency which is applied to synchronize oscillator 9 throughout the forward strokes of the scanning lines as described in Specification 1,070,193. The polarity reversal of the I signal may be removed by the inclusion of 180 degree phase shifter in line 23 or 25 which is switched in and out at line rate.
