Abstract
In a rolling mill, in which the roll pass comprises an assembly of separate roll carrying cages on a common frame from which they can be withdrawn separately, the cages are clamped together to form a rigid unit. Two rows of staggered drive shafts for the rolling cages 5 project from a casing 2, which is fixed to a base, wherein a fixed frame 3, comprising beams 3a, 3b, supports a movable frame 4, comprising beams 4a, 4b, on which are mounted the rolling cages 5. The frame 4 is provided with a bearing plate 10 supporting jacks 12, and the frame 4 is locked to the frame 3 by the rods 13a of jacks 13 passing through parts 3c. Each cage 5 is secured by a jack 14 and jacks 16 operate two racks, the teeth (17a) of which engage notches (5b) in the cage bases, Figs. 9 and 10, (not shown) and serve to separate the cages after they have been clamped together so that individual cages may be replaced. The cages are coupled to the staggered shafts by gear couplings which have elastic rings 46 to allow for slight misalignment and are operated by a member 42 controlled by hydraulic jacks. The frame 4 may be mounted on wheels 50, 51, the latter running on beams 52 which are provided with endless chains 55 running over pulleys 57a and driven through a reduction gear 58 (Fig. 13). A jacking system is provided to lift the beams 52 into contact with the pulleys 51, Fig. 3 (not shown). Fig. 13 shows the cycle of operation. A cage supporting carriage is in the position a between a furnace 69 and a cuting off station 70 and a second carriage is in position b on track 66a. After unlocking the cage carrying plate in position a the beams 52 are lifted to raise the carriage sufficiently to allow its transfer to a parking frame 67 in position c by means of the chains 55. A jack 68 moves the second carriage from a waiting position b into a position d along a track 66a, 66, whereupon the carriage is lifted by the beams 52 and moved to the position a.
