Abstract

The co-operating rotor and stator discs 2, 1 of a pulp refiner each include tangentially radiating grooves of progressively increasing width the parts of each disc between the grooves being stepped in profile. As described, the stator disc 1 is secured in a cylindrical housing 3 and comprises grooves 4. The rotor disc 2 is held by a pin 6 on a revolving shaft 7, and comprises grooves 8 with serations 9 opposed to those of the stator, and the central part of its upper face is incurved. In operation, rotation of the rotor causes transverse alternation of the serations 5 and 9, and longitudinal alternation of the edges of the grooves 4 and 8. The discs may be arranged in successive pairs by superimposition on a vertical shaft, or juxtaposition on a horizontal shaft, to form a compound mill.
