Abstract
De-ashed active carbon having a low content of metallic compounds, especially iron compounds, is prepared by washing active carbon with 2N nitric acid at a temperature of 50 DEG to 75 DEG C., followered by washing and drying steps.ALSO:Vinyl chloride is prepared by passing dichloroethane vapours mixed with chlorine and/or oxygen as a gaseous activator over a solid catalyst comprising graphite or de-ashed active carbon at a temperature of from 300 to 600 DEG C. and a pressure of up to 40 atmospheres. Either isomer of dichloroethane may be used. Unchanged dichloroethane may be separated from the reaction products and recycled to the reactor. An example is given. Comparative tests describe similar processes in which the catalyst and/or gaseous activator is omitted.
