Abstract
A crystalline vinyl chloride polymer of molecular weight above 10,000 and a Vicat softening point higher than 90 DEG C. determined with a load of 5 Kg according to A.S.T.M. Specification D-1525-58T is prepared by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a transition metal compound and an organo-aluminium compound of formula: APR1n(OR11)mXp where R1 is an alyphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical of up to 10 carbon atoms, R11 is an alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl group optionally containing an ethereal oxygen atom, X is halogen, n is 1 or 2, m is 1 or 2, p is 0 or 1 and n+m+p=3 under anhydrous conditions either in the absence of a solvent or in the presence of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent for the monomer. The transition metal component may be in the form of a complex with an organic Lewis base containing nitrogen or oxygen. Fibres, films and manufactured articles may be made from the polymers.
