Abstract

A liquid hardening agent for (i) polyepoxy resins comprises (ii) an aniline resin in solution or suspension in (iii) a liquid triaryl phosphite or liquid mixture of triaryl phosphites. Polyepoxy resins (i) have an epoxy equivalency greater than 1 and are defined as being poly-glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols, e.g. resorcinol, 4, 41-dihydroxy diphenyl methane, 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl-2,2-propane and phenolaldehyde condensation products. In example (1) a detailed preparation of a resin from bisphenol A and epichlorhydrin is described. Aniline resins (ii) are defined and are essentially condensation products of aniline or a nuclear alkyl- or chloro-substituted aniline, e.g. m-toluidine or p-chloroaniline, with an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, furfuraldehyde or acetaldehyde. In example (1) a detailed preparation of a resin from aniline and formaldehyde is described. Triaryl phosphites (iii) specified are phenyl, cresyl and xylyl. Phenolic accelerators (iv) may also be added, e.g. resorcinol, phenoglacinol, pentachlorophenol, catechol, phenol, phenol-o-sulphonic acid, cresols, and a -phenyl-phenol. Optional additives specified are slate gum, sand and chalk. Use. Glass cloth laminating resins, casting or moulding. Specification 882,016 is referred to.
