Abstract
The invention comprises 4,5-seco-19-nor-androst-9(11)-ene-3,5-dione compounds of the general formula:- <FORM:0914738/IV (b)/1> and the corresponding 3-monoketals, particularly the 3-ethylene ketal, in which R represents an alkyl group or an alkenyl group of from one to six carbon atoms and Ac represents an acyl radical, also the 3-monoketals of 17b -acyloxy-4,5-seco-19-nor-androst-9-ene-5-one, and processes for the preparation (a) of compounds of the above general formula by protecting the 3-ketone group of a 17b -acyloxy - 4,5 - seco - 19 - nor-androst-9-ene-3,5-dione, reacting the product with an alkyl or alkenyl halide and subsequently liberating the 3-keto group, and (b) of 9(11)-dehydro-testosterone or its 10b -alkyl or alkenyl homologues by simultaneously cyclizing and saponifying said compounds of the above general formula by subjecting them to the action of an alkali metal base. Detailed examples illustrate the invention, and a synthesis of cortisone and its 10b -alkyl and alkenyl analogues from the new compounds is outlined.
