Abstract

In a seat, e.g. for a compartmented railway carriage, the lower extremity of the back rest (7) is articulated on the rear part of the seat squab (8) by pivots (9) on forwardly extending plates (6) and its upper extremity bears against a wall (2). The pivots (9) are carried by link rods (15) articulated on a spindle (16) carried by a fixed frame (3). Fixed stops (17, 18) limit the amplitude of the pivoting movement of the link rods (15) and consequently of the simultaneous advancing or rearward movements of the seat squab (8) and of the back rest (7) between the full lines position and the broken lines position (Fig. 1). A rear prolongation (21) of the seat squab (8) carries a roller (22) which rolls against a fixed cam (23) to retain the seat squab in the in-use positions. The seat squab can be raised by rotation on the pivots (9) until it is brought against the back rest (Fig. 3) to enable sweeping beneath it. The user re-distributes his weight to move the seat from its rearward to its forward position.
