Abstract

(+)-13-norfaranal of Formula (I> < IMAGE > is prepared by forming an anion from the compound of formula < IMAGE > reacting the anion with a compound of formula < IMAGE > esterifying the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > treating the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > with a hydroxy-protecting agent reducing the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > reacting the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > with a halogenating or acylating agent reducing the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > hydrolysing the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > and oxidising the resulting compound of formula < IMAGE > to form (+)-13-norfaranal. (+)-13-norfaranal is a known tracing feromon of Pharaoh's ant and can be used for the control of this insect.
