- the narrow surface decoration 27 thus represents a copy of the decoration area 26.
- the decoration area 26 in the decoration template 22 forms a kind of extension of the decoration cutout 21, which is printed on the narrow surface 17.
- a precisely coordinated decorative pattern is formed between the workpiece decoration 19 on the wide surface 16 and the narrow surface decoration 27 on the narrow surface 17.
- the decorative pattern, in Figure 1 as the wood grain, thus passes precisely from the wide surface 16 to the narrow surface 17. This gives the workpiece 11 an appearance as if it were made of solid wood.
- the printing control 24 controls the printing unit 12 to carry out the printing process.
- the position of the printing unit 12 is determined by the positioning device 15 before the start of the printing process and the printing unit 12 is aligned accordingly with respect to the narrow surface 17.
- the positioning of the printing unit 12 is carried out using the recorded surface information 23 depending on the decorative profile of the workpiece decoration 19 on the wide surface 19.
- the actual printing process begins and the narrow surface decoration 27 is printed on the narrow surface 17, in particular on the coating material on the narrow surface 17.
- the workpiece 11 is moved continuously or discontinuously by the conveyor device 14 to the printing unit 12.
- the acquisition of the surface information 23 and the execution of the printing process for printing the narrow surface decoration 27 can take place in particular in real time, i.e. immediately one after the other, so that the acquisition of the surface information and the execution of the printing process are provided essentially at the same time.
- the method can also be designed such that the sensor device 13 detects the surface information 23 in an edge region of the wide surface 16 adjacent to the narrow surface 17 to be printed during a travel movement to the workpiece 11 and the printing information for Controlling the printing unit 12, in particular in real time, by the printing control 24 from the recorded surface information 23.
- the printing information is determined or derived from the recorded surface information 23 of the edge area.
- the printing unit 12 is controlled using this printing information in order to carry out the printing process for printing the narrow surface decoration 27, wherein the printing information is determined by the printing control 24 in such a way that the narrow surface decoration 27 forms a coordinated decoration pattern with the workpiece decoration 19 on the wide surface 19.
- the detection of the surface information, the determination of the printing information and the execution of the printing process take place essentially simultaneously.
- the surface information 23 is already recorded during the production of the workpiece 11, i.e. after the workpiece decoration 19 has been applied to the wide surface 19.
- This surface information 23 is stored as workpiece-related data in the printing control 24. If this workpiece 11 is subsequently fed to the printing device 10 in order to print the narrow surfaces 17, the workpiece-related data is called up, the corresponding printing information is determined by the printing control 24 and the printing unit 12 is controlled to carry out the corresponding printing process.

Description
The invention relates to a method for printing a surface of a workpiece and a printing device for printing a surface of a workpiece.
Workpieces made of wood materials, such as chipboard or fiberboard, are often used to manufacture furniture parts or other construction elements. For optical and functional reasons, such workpieces are usually provided with a coating material, which is applied to both the wide surfaces of the workpiece and the narrow surfaces. The coating material on the wide surface can have a decoration, for example in the form of a simulated wood grain, a stone replica or the like, which can be reproduced on the narrow surfaces by a subsequent printing process with a printing device. The decoration on the wide surface can be captured by image capture so that it can be printed on the narrow surface.
However, when capturing the wide area, large amounts of data are generated that must be processed by a control system, so that extended process times occur, especially when printing a large number of workpieces. In addition, this printing process leads to optical deviations between the decorative gradients of adjacent workpiece surfaces, so that For example, the grain pattern on the wide surface does not match the grain pattern on the narrow surface.

This can shorten the process times so that the workpieces can be printed in a continuous process.
According to the invention, the optically detected workpiece surface has a workpiece decoration that corresponds to a decoration section from the determined decoration template, wherein the print control determines the position of the corresponding decoration section from the decoration template on the basis of the detected surface information and/or the workpiece dimensions and the print information for printing the narrow surface decoration is determined from at least one decoration area of the decoration template.
By determining the exact position of the decorative cutout in the decorative template, the decorative progression of the narrow surface decoration can be adapted particularly precisely to the decorative progression of the workpiece decoration.
An advantageous development of the method can provide that the print control determines a corresponding decor template from a decor data set based on the recorded surface information and the print information for controlling the printing process is determined or derived from the decor template.
In this way, the decorative template serving as the printing template can be identified from the data set using the recorded surface information. By determining or deriving the printing information from this decorative template, a narrow surface decoration can be reproduced on the narrow surface, the decorative progression of which is coordinated with the decorative progression of the workpiece surface.
In a particularly preferred development of the method, the printing information for printing the narrow surface decoration can be determined from a decoration area of the decoration template which borders on the decoration cutout of the workpiece decoration in the decoration template, wherein this decoration area is printed on the narrow surface in such a way that a coordinated decoration course is formed between the workpiece decoration of the workpiece surface and the narrow surface decoration of the narrow surface.
In this way, a decorative strip is determined from the decorative template that borders the decorative cutout of the workpiece surface. The decorative strip has a width that corresponds to the thickness of the workpiece. The printing information is determined from this decorative strip and an image of the decorative strip is printed in the exact position on the narrow surface of the workpiece.
An advantageous embodiment of the method can provide that the printing unit is positioned relative to the narrow surface by a positioning device, wherein the printing unit is arranged in a defined position relative to the narrow surface depending on the detected surface information and the printing process is controlled in a manner coordinated with the decorative progression of the workpiece decoration of the workpiece surface.
The positioning device can be used to determine, provide and monitor the exact positioning of the printing unit in relation to the workpiece. This can be done in particular before the start of the printing process, so that the position of the printing unit can be precisely aligned and adjusted. In particular, if the printing unit and the workpiece are moved relative to each other during the printing process, monitoring of the positioning of the printing unit can also be made possible.
A further preferred embodiment of the method can provide that during the acquisition of the surface information and/or during the execution of the printing process, a continuous or discontinuous conveying movement of the workpiece or a continuous or discontinuous travel movement of the printing unit is carried out.
In this way, it is possible to print workpieces in a continuous process, so that a large number of workpieces can be printed one after the other. The workpieces can carry out the conveying movement during the printing process. An interruption of the conveying movement can also be provided to carry out the printing process.
In an alternative development of the method, the surface information of an edge region of the workpiece surface that borders on the narrow surface to be printed can be optically recorded and the printing information for printing the narrow surface decoration can be determined or derived from the recorded surface information of the edge region.
In particular, it can be provided that the narrow surface decoration is printed on the narrow surface by the printing process in such a way that a coordinated decoration course is formed between the workpiece surface and the narrow surface. In particular, it can be provided that the edge region of the workpiece surface is detected by a displacement movement of the sensor device and the printing information is determined or derived and the printing process is carried out essentially simultaneously on the at least one narrow surface.
An advantageous embodiment of the method can also provide that the acquisition of the surface information and the execution of the printing process for printing the Narrow surface decorations can be carried out in real time, preferably in immediate succession. This means that the acquisition of the surface information and the execution of the printing process can take place essentially simultaneously. In this way, very short process times can be achieved for printing at least one narrow surface of the workpiece.
The printing device for printing at least one narrow surface of a workpiece, in particular a workpiece which is at least partially made of wood, a wood material, plastic, composite material or the like and is provided at least in regions with a coating material, comprises at least one printing unit for printing the at least one narrow surface of the workpiece, wherein the printing unit and/or the workpiece are provided so as to be movable relative to one another in order to carry out the printing process, wherein a sensor device is provided by which surface information of at least one workpiece surface adjacent to the narrow surface to be printed can be optically detected at least in regions, and a printing control by which a method according to one of the previously described embodiments can be carried out to control the at least one printing unit.
By means of such a printing device, at least one narrow surface of the workpiece can be printed with a narrow surface decoration that is coordinated with a decorative pattern of the adjacent workpiece surface. In this way, the workpiece can be provided with a decoration that conveys a high-quality visual impression, for example in the form of a simulated wood grain, a stone replica or another graphic pattern or image. The surfaces of the workpiece are in particular provided with a coating material, for example a wood veneer, surface paper and/or coating varnish or the like. By at least partially recording the surface information of the workpiece surface, a Reduction of the amount of data can be achieved so that faster data processing can be provided by the print control. This means that significantly faster process times can be achieved so that the narrow surfaces of the workpieces can be printed with this printing device in a continuous process with a narrow surface decoration that matches the workpiece decoration of the wide surface.
An advantageous development of the printing device can provide that a conveyor device is provided for receiving several workpieces, by means of which the workpieces can be conveyed in a continuous or discontinuous conveying movement, wherein the narrow surfaces can be printed on by the printing unit during the continuous or discontinuous conveying movement. Such a conveyor device can enable workpieces to be printed on in a continuous process.
The workpieces can carry out the conveying movement during the printing process or the conveying movement can be interrupted for the printing process. In this way, the process times can be reduced considerably, so that a large number of workpieces can be printed one after the other. The recording of the surface information and the execution of the printing process can take place in real time, i.e. essentially at the same time, so that the process times can be shortened even further.

The recorded
Using the determined printing information, the
Likewise, in an alternative embodiment of the printing method, it can be provided that the
