Description

  • The present patent concerns the field of bed accessories, and in particular it concerns a new inflatable edge protector suited to be applied to the edge of hospital beds or children's beds.
  • Different types of bed edge protectors are currently available on the market.
  • In fact, edge protectors are known that are suited to be applied to the edges of babies or children's beds during the first years of life.
  • Said edge protectors usually comprise a layer in sponge rubber or foam, covered with coloured fabric with varying consistency, wherein said edge protectors are tied to the edge of the child's bed by means of ties suited to be knotted around said edges.
  • Said edge protectors, also called bumpers, are commonly made in a single piece suited to cover the two side edges of the bed and the front area of the bed, where the child usually rests his/her head.
  • Furthermore, edge protectors are known that are suited to be applied to the edges of the beds used in homes, hospitals, and homes for the elderly.
  • Said edge protectors usually comprise a layer made of foam polyurethane, wherein said layer is covered with a transpiring bielastic fabric. Said edge protectors are coupled with the edges of the bed by means of a system of hinges or ties, so that said edge protectors can be easily removed for cleaning purposes.
  • The present invention makes it possible to produce a new type of edge protector that is more adaptable to the edge and the bed, and therefore is more user-friendly.
  • The new invention, in fact, is an edge protector with different thickness in the various areas covering the bed edge, so that the portion of edge protector that is adjacent to the lower area of the bed edge, and at the level of the mattress, is thinner and can be easily positioned between the mattress and the bed edge.
  • It is the object of the present invention to provide a new edge protector having a wedge-shaped area suited to be inserted between the bed edge and the mattress.
  • It is the object of the present invention to provide an edge protector that can be inflated and deflated when it needs to be washed and stored.
  • It is the object of the present invention to provide an inflatable edge protector suited to be rapidly fixed to the edges of the bed by means of a Velcro® system.
  • Said objects are achieved by the new edge protector comprising two external planar sheets sealed to each other along their edges.
  • A set of internal planar partitions, called tie elements, is fixed to said external planar sheets, wherein said tie elements provide a connection between the external planar sheets, as the upper edge of each one of said tie elements is integral with the upper sheet and the lower edge of each one of said tie elements is integral with the lower sheet, in such a way as to shape said edge protector with an upper and a lower series of undulations arranged side by side.
  • The edges of said tie elements are sealed inversely in an alternate manner, so that the tension forces acting in opposite directions compensate for each other and the bed edge protector is not subjected to an undesired rolling effect.
  • Said tie elements have different heights that vary decreasingly along the height of the edge protector, so that the edge protector acquires the shape of a wedge in its lower portion and the lower area of the edge protector consequently becomes narrower.
  • In the lower area, in fact, the tie elements are shorter than in the upper area, in such a way that the upper area is thicker.
  • Said bed edge protector comprises a valve suited to allow the edge protector itself to be inflated.
  • In the preferred embodiment of the invention said bed edge protector can be folded in its upper area so that it can be fixed to the edge of the bed by means of a Velcro® system.
  • In the preferred embodiment of the invention said edge protector can also be used as a pillow lifter.
  • Said new edge protector can be made of a PVC film, or a polyurethane film, or a polyurethane fabric film, or similar plastic materials.
  • The characteristics of the new bed edge protector are illustrated in greater detail in the following description, with reference to the drawings that are attached hereto by way of non-limiting example.
    • Figure 1 shows a cross section of the bed edge protector, while Figure 2 shows the assembled bed edge protector.
    • Figure 1a shows a cross section of a second embodiment of the bed edge protector, as described in claim 1.
  • Figure 1 shows a cross section of the bed edge protector. Said bed edge protector comprises two external planar sheets, an upper one S1 and a lower one S2, made of PVC, or polyurethane, or polyurethane fabric or similar plastic materials.
  • Said upper and lower external planar sheets S1 and S2 are in the same size, are sealed to each other along their perimeter edges P, and are connected to each other directly D, or even by means of partitions, called tie elements T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, both sides of which are fixed to the inner surface of the two upper and lower external planar sheets S1 and S2 of the bed edge protector.
  • Some tie elements T1, T2, T3 are fixed inversely to other tie elements T4, T5. All the tie elements T are fixed to the inner surfaces of the two upper and lower external planar sheets S 1 and S2. This reverse and alternate fixing prevents the tie elements from producing a rolling effect on the bed edge protector and thus allows the latter to be spread and remain planar over its entire length.
  • Said tie elements T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, furthermore, have different heights.
  • Said height L of the tie elements T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6 is shorter in the lower area of the bed edge protector, so that said area of the bed edge protector can be comfortably inserted between the edge of the bed and the mattress.
  • In the embodiment shown in figure 1a, said bed edge protector comprises two external planar sheets, an upper one S 1 and a lower one S2, and wherein said upper (S1) and lower (S2) external plane sheets are connected to each other through internal parallel plane elements, substantially orthogonal to said external sheets, serving as tie elements (T1'), sealed onto the internal surfaces of the upper (S1) and lower (S2) external plane sheets and suited to shape said bed edge protector with a series of undulations arranged side by side.
  • Figure 2 shows the bed edge protector comprising two upper and lower external planar sheets S 1 and S2.
  • Said upper and lower external planar sheets S1 and S2 are fixed to each other along their edges P and also by means of a system of tie elements T1, T2, T3, T5, T5, wherein said tie elements T1, T2, T3, T5, T5 have a height L that varies decreasingly towards the lower area of the bed edge protector.
  • Said bed edge protector comprises also a Velcro® system for fixing it to the edge of the bed. Said fixing system comprises at least two pairs of straps R1, R2, R3, R4 in a Velcro® material positioned in two areas of the bed edge protector, so that the bed edge protector can be rolled up on the upper part of the bed edge and then fixed to it. Said bed edge protector comprises also a valve G suited to allow the user to introduce air into the edge protector and the latter to assume the shape and the elasticity necessary to dampen any impact of the user with the edge of the bed.
  • Said bed edge protector can also be used as a supporting base for the user's pillow, so as to create a support for the user's head when he/she lies down.
  • Therefore, with reference to the above description and the attached drawings, the following claims are expressed.
