Definitions
- the present invention relates to a door lock assembly for being arranged at a door.
- the door lock assembly includes an cylinder housing, a cylinder body, a rotating member, a driving pin coupled to the rotating member and configured to rotate with rotation of the rotating member and operable to rotate and move a latch between two positions including a door locked position and a door unlocked position, and a first locking device preventing rotation of the rotating member in the absence of an appropriate key.
- the present invention also relates to a method for locking or unlocking a door.
- Door locks may permit using a master key.
- a master key operates a set of several locks. Usually, there is nothing special about the key itself, but rather the lock into which it will fit. These master-keyed locks are designed to open with two different keys; one which is specific to each lock, the so called specific key which cannot operate any of the other locks in the set, and the master key which opens all locks in the set. Locks that have master keys have a second set of the mechanism used to operate them that is identical to all of the locks in the set of locks.
- One problem with master-keyed locks is that it is not possible to add a new lock to the set of locks without having to exchange the lock, which necessitates a change of specific key.
- SE 523 057 discloses a lockable metal container which may be provided in a bore of a door leaf. A spare key to the door lock may then be placed in the metal container.
- An spare key to the lockable metal container may then be placed in the metal container.
- An attacker who has access to the lockable metal container thereby gets access to the door.
- the system is for instance useful for home help service companies since it allows adding new clients without having to change the original door lock at the door of the client, but instead the door can be provided with the lockable metal container. Thereby the client may keep their original key.
- One problem with systems using a metal container provided in the door is that a bore has to be made in the door to fit the metal container. Thus, if the system is not used anymore, for instance if home help service is no longer necessary, it is not possible to restore the door, but the bore have to be provided with a cover.
- Another problem with the key keeping system shown in SE 523 057 is that the container is visible from the exterior side of the door and thus notifies that the door accesses a home having home help service, which is not always desired.
- Yet another problem with the key keeping system shown in SE 523 057 is that opening the door is more complicated than if a master-key is used. A master key is used in the same manner as the original key, i.e. it opens the door lock directly, whereas a key keeping system requires opening the container first and then the door lock can be opened.
- An object of the present invention is to at least partly overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks and to provide a door lock assembly which allow a door to be locked and unlocked using two different locking actuators, wherein one of the locking actuators is the key to the original door lock.
- a door lock assembly for being arranged at a door including an cylinder housing, a cylinder body, a rotating member, a driving pin coupled to the rotating member and configured to rotate with rotation of the rotating member and operable to rotate and move a latch between two positions including a door locked position and an door unlocked position, and a first locking device preventing rotation of the rotating member in the absence of an appropriate key.
- the cylinder body is adapted for axial movement in respect to the cylinder housing.
- the assembly further includes a second locking device preventing axial movement of the cylinder body within the cylinder housing in a first blocking state, and in a second released state allowing axial movement of the cylinder body such that it is axially movable from the interior of the cylinder housing to enable rotation of the cylinder body in relation to the cylinder housing together with the rotating member to cause the driving pin to rotate between the door locked position and the door unlocked position.
- the door lock assembly comprises an cylinder housing adapted for secure attachment to a door; a first cylinder body located at least partially within said cylinder housing; a first rotating member located at least partially within the first cylinder body and selectively rotatable with respect to the first cylinder body, the first rotating member including a first key receptacle; a driving pin coupled to the first rotating member and configured to rotate with rotation of the first rotating member and operable to rotate and move a latch between two positions including a door locked position and an door unlocked position; and a first locking device preventing rotation of the first rotating member with respect of the first cylinder body in the absence of an appropriate key and allowing rotation of the first rotating member with respect to the first cylinder body upon the insertion of an appropriate key in the first key receptacle.
- At least one of said cylinder housing and said first cylinder body is configured to prevent rotation of said first cylinder body within said cylinder housing; the first cylinder body is adapted for axial movement in respect to said cylinder housing; the door lock assembly further comprises a second locking device having a first blocking state in which the second locking device prevents axial movement of said first cylinder body, and a second released state in which said second locking device allows axial movement of said first cylinder body such that said first cylinder body is axially movable from the interior of said housing to enable rotation of said first cylinder body in relation to said cylinder housing together with the first rotating member to cause the driving pin to rotate between said door locked position and said door unlocked position.
- the door lock assembly allows, when arranged at a door, two different exterior locking devices to be used to operate the latch, e.g. to lock and unlock the door.
- two different opening devices may be used to control the latch.
- a first opening device such as a key
- a second opening device may operate the second locking device.
- the door lock assembly is possible to arrange at a door having an existing locking mechanism which is operable with an existing exterior locking device, such as a locking cylinder, using an existing key.
- the door lock assembly is useful to arrange at any door to which more than one person should have access, without having to exchange the existing key.

- the second locking device blocks or releases the axial movement of the first cylinder body 32 by engaging or disengaging a blocking member 44, 54 and an axial movement limiting device 38, which in the above embodiments comprises the stop washer 38.
- the first cylinder body 32 may extend outside the outer surface of the cylinder housing 31 in its axially locked position, i.e. when being retracted in the cylinder housing 31 and the blocking member 44, 54 engaging the stop washer 38.
- the cylinder body 32 may easily, after having released the first cylinder body 32 for axial movement A, be engaged by hand to pull out the cylinder body 32 from the cylinder housing 31, rotate it and push it back in again into the cylinder housing 31.
- the cylinder body 32 may also be resiliently mounted within the cylinder housing 31, e.g. spring-loaded, and as soon as the first cylinder body 32 is released for axial movement A, a spring force urges the cylinder body 32 to extend outside the outer surface of the cylinder housing 31 to enable engagement therewith by hand to pull out, rotate and push back in again.
- the cylinder housing 31 may be provided in two pieces, an outer cylinder housing part 31 a and inner cylinder housing part 31 b, wherein the inner cylinder housing part 31 b may at least partly be arranged embedded in the door leaf, while the outer cylinder housing may be arranged on the outside of the door leaf.
- the cylinder bodies 32 shown in the enclosed drawings all have a non-circular outer end view, and together with the shape of the recess 47 in the cylinder housing 31, a rotation of the cylinder body 32 within the cylinder housing 31 is prevented.
- the cylinder housing and the cylinder body are configured to prevent rotation of the cylinder body within the cylinder housing.
- the cylinder bodies may have a circular outer end view, and the recess within the cylinder housing may also be circular. Also in such embodiments rotation of the cylinder body within the cylinder housing may be prevented, for example by arranging the rotating member off center in the cylinder body. Thus, in such an embodiment it is the cylinder body which is configured to prevent rotation of the first cylinder body within the cylinder housing.

Thereby, the door lock assembly allows residents, utilizing home help service, to keep their original door keys and to continue locking and unlocking their doors using their original keys. The door lock assembly also permit access for the home help service firm, but instead of changing the original door lock, the door lock assembly is arranged to cooperate with the existing door lock mechanism. The cylinder housing is exchanged to the door lock assembly according to the invention, and the original lock cylinder is reused as a first cylinder body with first rotating member. The home help service firm may thereby use one opening mechanism to all households which are provided with the door locking assembly, without having to use a master key system.
- Yet another advantage with the door lock assembly according to the present invention is that it is possible to lock or unlock the door using only one action. A key keeping system having a container in which a spare key is kept may be difficult to handle with one hand. Further, with key keeping system it is always necessary to open two locks, first the lock to the container and then the door lock, which is more complicated and time consuming than using the door lock assembly.
- The locking mechanism may be of a kind known in the art which is arranged in a lock housing in a cavity of the door. As is also well known in the art, the locking mechanism cooperates, via the latch, with a striking plate arranged in the door frame to lock the door.

Fig. 1 a shows adoor lock assembly 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention arranged at adoor 2. Thedoor lock assembly 1 may be installed at adoor 2 and be connected to an existinglocking mechanism 3 arranged at adoor 2. Thedoor 2 may be a front door to a building such as a house or to an apartment. The door has aninterior door surface 4 and anexterior door surface 5. As most common front doors, thedoor 2 is provided with two throughopenings first bore 6 andsecond bore 7. Adoor lock assembly 1 is arranged in connection with thefirst bore 6 on the exterior side of the door and a interior locking device (not shown), like a knob, on the interior side of thedoor 2. Thesecond bore 7 of thedoor 2 holds adoor handle 9. Thedoor handle 9 comprises alever 10 and a rotatable portion (not shown) arranged through thesecond bore 7. Thelever 10 is in parallel with the door leaf, and the rotatable portion is perpendicular to the door leaf. The rotatable portion is coupled to afirst latch 12. - As in a common door, having door locks, a
lock housing 13 holding alocking mechanism 3 is arranged in a cavity of thedoor 2. Thelocking mechanism 3 and thelock housing 13 are of common sort, which are well known in the art, and not described in detail here. Thelocking mechanism 3 may be of any kind known in the art which is arranged in a lock housing in a cavity of adoor 2. As is also well known in the art, thelocking mechanism 3 cooperates, vialatches door 2. Thelocking mechanism 3 controls asecond latch 14 via thedoor lock assembly 1 from the exterior side of thedoor 2 and via the interior locking device from the interior side of thedoor 2 in a well known manner. Thelocking mechanism 3 is coupled to thesecond latch 14 by a conventional coupling means (not shown) so as to actuate thesecond latch 14. - The
first latch 12 is a non-lockable latch, and is controlled by thedoor handle 9. Thedoor handle 9 is coupled to thefirst latch 12 via thelock housing 13 by conventional coupling means (not shown here) so as to actuate thefirst latch 12 by means of the rotatable portion and a shaft (not shown here). Thus, thefirst latch 12 is opened by pushing down thelever 10 in a convention manner. -
Fig. 1b shows adoor lock assembly 1 according to a second embodiment of the invention arranged at adoor 2. As disclosed earlier thedoor lock assembly 1 may be installed at adoor 2 and be connected to an existinglocking mechanism 3 arranged at a door. -
Fig. 2 shows adoor lock assembly 1 according to the first embodiment in an exploded view to disclose the different part thereof in more detail. Thedoor lock assembly 1 has a first cylinder housing 31, which is adapted for secure attachment to adoor 2 at thefirst bore 6. At least partially within saidfirst cylinder housing 31 afirst cylinder body 32 is arranged, and at least partially within saidfirst cylinder body 32 a first rotatingmember 33 is arranged. The first rotatingmember 33 has a firstkey receptacle 34 and is selectively rotatable within respect to thefirst cylinder body 32 upon insertion of an appropriate key in the firstkey receptacle 34. In absence of an appropriate key, afirst locking device member 33 with respect to thefirst cylinder body 32. A drivingplate 36 and a drivingpin 37 is coupled to the first rotatingmember 33 and configured to rotate with rotation of the first rotatingmember 33. The drivingpin 37 is then coupled to thelocking mechanism 3 and by rotating between two positions, the drivingpin 37 urges thesecond latch 14 to expel from thelock housing 13 to engage the striking plate arranged in the door frame to lock the door, or urges thesecond latch 14 to withdraw into thelock housing 13 to unlock thedoor 2. - A
stop washer 38 is mounted and coupled to thecylinder body 32 in aninner end 32b thereof arranged within the cylinder housing 31. Preferably, thecylinder body 32 is mounted and coupled to thestop washer 38 by a bearing mounting 39. Thestop washer 38 has at least partly a radial extension which is larger than the radial extension of thecylinder body 32. Thus when thestop washer 38 is mounted and coupled to thecylinder body 32 it has dimensions which provides aflange 49 extending radially outside at least a part of a periphery of thefirst cylinder body 32. - The
lock assembly 1 further comprises asecond cylinder body 40 which may be arranged at least partly in the first cylinder housing 31. A second rotatingmember 41 is arranged at least partly within thesecond cylinder body 40. The second rotatingmember 41 has a secondkey receptacle 42 and is selectively rotatable within respect to thesecond cylinder body 40 upon insertion of an appropriate key in the secondkey receptacle 42. In absence of an appropriate key, asecond locking device member 41 with respect to thesecond cylinder body 40 and allows rotation of the second rotatingmember 41 with respect to thesecond cylinder body 40 between a first blocking state and a second released state upon insertion of an appropriate key in thekey receptacle 42. - A blocking
member 44 is coupled to the second rotatingmember 41 in such a way that it rotates with rotation of the second rotatingmember 41. The blockingmember 44 has ablock shoulder 45 which is arranged to interact with thestop washer 38 when the second rotatingmember 41 is rotated to said first blocking state, and to not interact with thestop washer 38 in said second released state. Thus, when the blockingmember 44 interact with thestop washer 38 and theflange 49 thereof, thefirst cylinder body 32 is prevented for axial movement, i.e. in a first blocking state, and when the blockingmember 44 is rotated out from interaction with theflange 49 of thestop washer 38, thefirst cylinder body 32 is released for axial movement, i.e. in a second released state. - The cylinder housing 31 has an
opening 46 in an outer surface thereof corresponding to a shape and size of thefirst cylinder body 32 and has aninner recess 47 in communication with saidopening 46 and corresponding a to an aggregated shape and size of thefirst cylinder body 32 mounted and coupled to saidstop washer 38. Thus, at the interface of therecess 47 and theopening 46, astop seat 48 is provided. With therecess 47 and theopening 46, the cylinder housing 31 prevents any rotation of thefirst cylinder body 32 as long as thefirst cylinder body 32 is kept at least partly within the cylinder housing 31. - As shown in
Fig. 3a and3b , thefirst cylinder body 32 is adapted for axial movement A in respect to the cylinder housing 31. Thus, inserting an appropriate second key in the secondkey receptacle 42, the second rotatingmember 41 may be rotated from a first blocking state, as shown inFig. 4a , to a second released state, as shown inFig. 4b , together with the blockingmember 44 and thereby bringing the lockingshoulder 45 out of engagement with theflange 49 of thestop washer 38. Thereafter, thefirst cylinder body 32 may be engaged by hand to be pulled out of the cylinder housing 31 in an axial movement from the position as shown inFig. 3a to the position shown inFig. 3b , in which position thestop washer 38 has abutted thestop seat 48, an end position limiting device, and thereby limited the axial movement of thefirst cylinder body 32. After having pulled thefirst cylinder body 32 out of the cylinder housing 31, thefirst cylinder body 32 is free to be rotate as shown inFig. 3c . As no appropriate first key has been inserted in the firstkey receptacle 34, the first rotatingmember 33 is locked for rotation within thefirst cylinder body 32 and will rotate together with the rotation of thefirst cylinder body 32 and also cause rotation of the drivingplate 36 together with the drivingpin 37, and thereby cause theordinary locking mechanism 3 within thelock housing 13 to expel or withdraw thesecond latch 14 for engagement or disengagement with the striking plate arranged in the doorframe to lock or unlock thedoor 2. - The
second cylinder body 40, second rotatingmember 41, secondkey receptacle 42 and the appropriate key thereto may comprise a mechanical key system or a digital key system. Also thefirst cylinder body 32, first rotatingmember 33, firstkey receptacle 34 and the appropriate key thereto may comprise a mechanical key system or a digital key system. - The digital key system may be any digital key system known in the art, and may in one embodiment comprise a solenoid to activate or inactivate the possible rotation of the second rotating
member 41. All other parts of the door lock assembly are the same as disclosed for the first embodiment disclosed above in relation tofig. 1a ,2 ,3a-c and4a-b . - In an alternative embodiment, the blocking
member 44 and the blockingshoulder 45 may also be brought in and out of engagement with theflange 49 of thestop washer 38 with a reciprocal movement initiated by the rotating movement of the second rotatingmember 41 and a guiding cam coupled with or arranged in the blockingmember 44. - In
Fig. 5a-e an alternative second embodiment of the door lock assembly according to the invention is shown. The difference to the first disclosed embodiment is that instead of asecond cylinder body 40 with a second rotatingmember 41 to block or release thefirst cylinder body 32 for axial movement, an electronic locking device, asolenoid 50, is arranged to block or release thefirst cylinder body 32 for axial movement. A blockingmember 54 is arranged to move back and forth to engage or disengage with thestop washer 38. Thesolenoid 50 is arranged with a blue tooth module (not shown), cables (not shown) connecting the solenoid and the blue tooth module, and a cable (not shown) arranged through thedoor 2 and connecting thesolenoid 50 at the exterior side of thedoor 2. Thesolenoid 50 may be activated by a tag, a card, or a mobile phone. The solenoid may also be arranged with a near field communication device (NFC). - As shown in
Fig. 5a , the blockingmember 54 is, in a first blocking state, arranged to engage thestop washer 38 with ablock shoulder 55 by a spring load (not shown) in arecess 56 arranged in the bearing mounting 39. Upon releasing thefirst cylinder body 32 for axial movement A, thecylinder body 32 is pushed into the interior 47 of the cylinder housing 31 as is shown inFig. 5b . Theblock shoulder 55 of the blockingmember 54 is then urged out from therecess 56 and out from engagement with thestop washer 38, and the blockingmember 54 will partly rotate around axis LM. Arecess 52 is arranged in the blockingmember 54, and when thesolenoid 50 is activated (via tag, card of mobile phone), asolenoid lock pin 51 is activated to engage therecess 52 in the blockingmember 54. Thereby, the first cylinder body is released for axial movement, and upon release of the pressure on thefirst cylinder body 32, the first cylinder body will expel from theinterior 47 of the cylinder housing 31 by aspring 53 arranged between a seat (not shown) in the cylinder housing 31 and thestop washer 38, and theouter end 32a of thefirst cylinder body 32 may be engaged by hand to pull it out from the cylinder housing 31 in an axial movement A until theflange 49 of thestop washer 38 abuts thestop seat 48 as shown inFig. 5c . Thefirst cylinder body 32 may then be rotated together with the bearing mounting 39, drivingplate 36 and drivingpin 37 to lock or unlock thedoor 2 as shown inFig. 5d . - After locking or unlocking the
door 2, thefirst cylinder body 32 is pushed back into the cylinder housing 31. The solenoid is activated to disengage thesolenoid lock pin 51 from therecess 52, whereby the spring load urges the blockingmember 54 to rotate around the axis LM and theblock shoulder 55 to engage therecess 56 and thestop washer 38 to again block thefirst cylinder body 32 for axial movement A. - Common for all the embodiments of the second locking device, is that it blocks or releases the axial movement of the
first cylinder body 32 by engaging or disengaging a blockingmember movement limiting device 38, which in the above embodiments comprises thestop washer 38. - The
first cylinder body 32 may extend outside the outer surface of the cylinder housing 31 in its axially locked position, i.e. when being retracted in the cylinder housing 31 and the blockingmember stop washer 38. When extending outside the outer surface of the cylinder housing 31, thecylinder body 32 may easily, after having released thefirst cylinder body 32 for axial movement A, be engaged by hand to pull out thecylinder body 32 from the cylinder housing 31, rotate it and push it back in again into the cylinder housing 31. On the other hand, thecylinder body 32 may also be resiliently mounted within the cylinder housing 31, e.g. spring-loaded, and as soon as thefirst cylinder body 32 is released for axial movement A, a spring force urges thecylinder body 32 to extend outside the outer surface of the cylinder housing 31 to enable engagement therewith by hand to pull out, rotate and push back in again. - In embodiments of the above disclosed door lock assemblies the cylinder housing 31 may be provided in two pieces, an outer
cylinder housing part 31 a and innercylinder housing part 31 b, wherein the innercylinder housing part 31 b may at least partly be arranged embedded in the door leaf, while the outer cylinder housing may be arranged on the outside of the door leaf. - The
cylinder bodies 32 shown in the enclosed drawings all have a non-circular outer end view, and together with the shape of therecess 47 in the cylinder housing 31, a rotation of thecylinder body 32 within the cylinder housing 31 is prevented. In these embodiments the cylinder housing and the cylinder body are configured to prevent rotation of the cylinder body within the cylinder housing. - However, in other, non-shown, embodiments of the invention the cylinder bodies may have a circular outer end view, and the recess within the cylinder housing may also be circular.
- The skilled person realises that a number of modifications of the embodiments described herein are possible without departing from the scope of the invention, which is defined in the appended claims.
