Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of closing devices and safety locks for doors, in particular for doors of motor vehicles, especially vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like.
- devices In the field of closing devices and safety locks for doors, devices generally comprising a lock body integrally applied to the concerned door, which houses a shaft adapted to guide a closing sliding bar integral with one end of said shaft, are available on the market.
- a rotating actuating knob is associated with said shaft, and is adapted to actuate it by rotating and then translating it in the axial direction so as close the so-called screw lock to which it belongs.
- Said rotating knob is further generally provided with a cylinder lock, or similar key locking means, which make key locking possible.
- German utility model DE29801855U1 discloses a door lock having the advantage that, by raising or by pivoting upward the inner door handle from the initial position or neutral position - in which the handle substantially extends horizontally - the opening of the door from the outside is prevented and therefore with a single handle on the indoor side, both the opening and the closing of the door is possible.
- British patent GB2272019A discloses a door latch comprising a casing, a latch bolt slidably located within the casing and having a nose portion projecting through a slot in an end of the casing and being capable of retraction into the casing against the force of spring means, a lever handle rotatably mounted to a side of the casing and associated with an operating cam to engage a part of the latch bolt to retract the nose thereof into the casing on rotation of the lever handle in a first direction, the operating cam having an abutment which may be brought into obstructive adjacency with a part of the latch bolt on rotation of the lever handle in a second direction to prevent retraction of the latch bolt nose, the spring means acting between the latch bolt and a locator member slidably mounted on the latch bolt and restrained by abutting engagement with the casing, the locator member having a nose portion engageable with the operating cam to provide positive location of the lever handle in the latch retraction preventing position.
- PCT application WO2007/096921 discloses an anti-tampering self-blocking device for spring latch or hook locks comprising: a first means, operated by means for the control of locks like handles, knobs, keys, latches or the combination of them all, which may perform two movements, one for opening the spring latchs and the hooks and one opposite to the same; a second means which may assume two positions, one for blocking the spring latchs or hooks and one for releasing the spring latchs or hooks and a third means which may assume two positions, one for blocking the second means and one for releasing the second means.
- the so-called screw lock In the closing systems used in the field, closing devices and safety locks for doors, and in particular in the field of doors of motor vehicles such as vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like, the so-called screw lock generally always provides for actuating the handle, which must be rotated by 180 degrees to close and then lock, and the possibility of snap-closing which occurs by simply resting the lock onto the frame of the door with a certain pressure, as occurs in normal entrance doors of homes, is not provided.
- This type of lock has the advantage of a greater ease of use as compared to screw locks because it can be actuated without needing to operate the handle.
- the closing device of the present invention can be applied to doors of vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like, and is characterized by a simplified handle with respect to the rotating-translational handles of the screw lock devices and is adapted to carry out a simple translation movement to lock the closing device.

- Snap closing occurred by means of the reciprocal sliding between said profile on the end of the sliding bar 20 and said profile of the backing means 21 present on the frame 25, which first allows the locking bar 20 to translate such as to compress said compression spring 23 and then the sliding bar 20 to translate in the opposite direction, so that the end of said sliding bar 20 engages the end of said backing means on frame 25, thus keeping door 17 closed.
- handle 11 In this position, handle 11 is in approximately central position with respect to its travel and protrudes from the plane of door 17 with an inclination of preferably about twenty degrees.
- said handle 11 By pushing handle 11 so as to accommodate it into said seat 12, as shown in accompanying Fig. 2 , said handle 11 is in start-of-travel position and operates the locking of the closing device object of the present invention, which occurs by means of the translation of slider 24, caused by the bias operated by said control lever 15 on abutment 19, so that said roller 22 overlaps said backing means 21 on frame 25. Thereby, the door is locked and may be locked with a key by operating on the specific locks arranged on the outer side of said door 17.
- said handle 11 in order to open the closing device according to the present invention, said handle 11 must be extracted from its housing 12 to approximately reach its end-of-travel position and an inclination, with respect to the plane of door 17, greater than the inclination which occurs in case of closed door condition, as shown in accompanying Fig. 2 and described above.
- this inclination preferably of about 40 degrees
- first said slider 24 associated with roller 22 and then said sliding bar 20 are subjected to a translation such as to release them from said backing means 21 on frame 25, thus allowing door 17 to be opened.
- Said slider 24 may advantageously be moved by means of an appropriate gear associated with handle.

- German utility model
DE29801855U1 discloses a door lock having the advantage that, by raising or by pivoting upward the inner door handle from the initial position or neutral position - in which the handle substantially extends horizontally - the opening of the door from the outside is prevented and therefore with a single handle on the indoor side, both the opening and the closing of the door is possible. British patentGB2272019A -
PCT application WO2007/096921 discloses an anti-tampering self-blocking device for spring latch or hook locks comprising: a first means, operated by means for the control of locks like handles, knobs, keys, latches or the combination of them all, which may perform two movements, one for opening the spring latchs and the hooks and one opposite to the same; a second means which may assume two positions, one for blocking the spring latchs or hooks and one for releasing the spring latchs or hooks and a third means which may assume two positions, one for blocking the second means and one for releasing the second means. - In the closing systems used in the field, closing devices and safety locks for doors, and in particular in the field of doors of motor vehicles such as vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like, the so-called screw lock generally always provides for actuating the handle, which must be rotated by 180 degrees to close and then lock, and the possibility of snap-closing which occurs by simply resting the lock onto the frame of the door with a certain pressure, as occurs in normal entrance doors of homes, is not provided.
- This type of lock has the advantage of a greater ease of use as compared to screw locks because it can be actuated without needing to operate the handle.
- It is an object of the present patent application to introduce a snap-closing device, also said of the latch lock or snap lock type, for doors with particular reference to doors for motor vehicles such as vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like, which allows greater simplicity and use practicality to be introduced with respect to the screw locks of the prior art.
- The closing device of the present invention can be applied to doors of vans, caravans, motor-homes and the like, and is characterized by a simplified handle with respect to the rotating-translational handles of the screw lock devices and is adapted to carry out a simple translation movement to lock the closing device.

Fig. 2 shows a section view of the lock according to the present invention in a locked position. -
Fig. 3 shows a section view of the lock according to the present invention in an open position. - The present invention relates to a snap-closing or latch lock or snap lock type device, in particular for doors of motor vehicles, such as vans, caravans, motor-homes or the like.
- With reference to accompanying
Fig.1 , the snap-closing device object of the present patent application comprises: aninner lock body 14 and anouter lock body 10 associated by means of appropriate fastening means - e.g. screws and threaded seats, adapted to promote their installation on a door 17 - or made in one piece only. Saidouter lock body 10 comprises, in turn, ahandle 11, associated with aspecific seat 12 adapted to contain it when it is in the locking position, and a possible key locking device, preferably of thecylinder type 13. Saidinner lock body 14 comprises, in turn, asliding bar 20 adapted to translate parallel to the surface of saiddoor 17 so as to engage appropriate backing means 21 on theframe 25 of saiddoor 17, said slidingbar 20 being associated with elastic means adapted to oppose the movement of said slidingbar 20 in a direction such as to allow saiddoor 17 to be snap-closed. Said elastic means preferably comprise acompression spring 23, integral at one end with the movable end of said slidingbar 20, and at the other end with the structure of saidinner lock body 14. - Said
handle 11 is associated with acontrol lever 15, preferably wedge-shaped, adapted to engage aspecific housing 16 inside saidinner lock body 14 and provided with twoabutments Handle 11 actuates saidcontrol lever 15 so as to control the translation of said slidingbar 20 parallel to the surface of saiddoor 17 by operating on aslider 24 integral with saidhousing 16 and provided with aroller 22 at one end thereof adapted to slide, under the bias of saidslider 24 on saidbacking means 21. - Furthermore, said sliding
bar 20 comprises one end provided with a profile adapted to slide on the corresponding profile of said appropriate backing means 21 on theframe 25 of saiddoor 17. - Said
handle 11 is free to move in the various steps of its operation between three different positions, shown in accompanyingFigs. 1 - 3 . - In the position shown in accompanying
Fig. 1 ,door 17 is closed but not locked. - Snap closing occurred by means of the reciprocal sliding between said profile on the end of the
sliding bar 20 and said profile of the backing means 21 present on theframe 25, which first allows thelocking bar 20 to translate such as to compress saidcompression spring 23 and then thesliding bar 20 to translate in the opposite direction, so that the end of said slidingbar 20 engages the end of said backing means onframe 25, thus keepingdoor 17 closed. - In this position,
handle 11 is in approximately central position with respect to its travel and protrudes from the plane ofdoor 17 with an inclination of preferably about twenty degrees. - By pushing
handle 11 so as to accommodate it into saidseat 12, as shown in accompanyingFig. 2 , saidhandle 11 is in start-of-travel position and operates the locking of the closing device object of the present invention, which occurs by means of the translation ofslider 24, caused by the bias operated by saidcontrol lever 15 onabutment 19, so that saidroller 22 overlaps said backing means 21 onframe 25. Thereby, the door is locked and may be locked with a key by operating on the specific locks arranged on the outer side of saiddoor 17. - With reference to accompanying
Fig. 3 , in order to open the closing device according to the present invention, saidhandle 11 must be extracted from itshousing 12 to approximately reach its end-of-travel position and an inclination, with respect to the plane ofdoor 17, greater than the inclination which occurs in case of closed door condition, as shown in accompanyingFig. 2 and described above. When this inclination, preferably of about 40 degrees, is reached due to the bias of saidcontrol lever 15 onabutment 18, first saidslider 24 associated withroller 22 and then said slidingbar 20 are subjected to a translation such as to release them from saidbacking means 21 onframe 25, thus allowingdoor 17 to be opened. The preferred embodiment described and illustrated in the accompanying figures should be considered a non-limiting example with respect to alternative embodiments which employ the same inventive concept, as defined by the appended claims. Saidslider 24 may advantageously be moved by means of an appropriate gear associated with handle.
