- the partial areas 40 together form the marking 16 of FIG. 1, the partial areas 42 the markings 18.
- the appearance of the markings 16, 18 within the optically variable recording layer 22 is visibly more attractive visually than the usual blackened areas of a white card body.
- the sub-regions 40 inscribed in this direction can be seen because of the focusing effect of the cylindrical lenses, which form an image for the observer 50, in the exemplary embodiment the letter "AAA" of the marking 16

- the first optically variable effect is given by the tilting effect of the laser tilting image 14: If the card is tilted from the viewing direction 34 over the viewing directions 30 and 32 towards the viewing direction 36, the viewer first sees the recording layer 22 without marking (viewing direction 34). The first marking 16 is visible from the viewing direction 30, then the second marking 18 from the viewing direction 32, until only the recording layer 22 without markings can be recognized again from the viewing direction 36.
- the second optically variable effect is generated by the optical variability of the recording layer 22 and depends on the type of the selected recording layer 22.
- the second optically variable effect may, for example, be a viewing-angle-dependent color-shift effect, which conveys to the viewer a color impression that changes with the viewing direction. Viewing angle dependent diffraction effects, scattering effects or refractive effects are also possible.
- the refraction of the cylindrical lenses of the lens grid 26 further modifies the second optically variable effect of the recording layer 22 compared to a separately present recording layer.
- the optically variable recording layer 22 may additionally be provided with a relief structure, for example an embossing pattern. be provided structure.

Data carriers such as identification cards, credit cards, bank cards and the like are increasingly being used in various service sectors, but also in the in-house area. They usually have to meet two opposing conditions. Because of their widespread use, they are a mass-produced product that should be simple and inexpensive to produce. On the other hand, they should offer the greatest possible security against counterfeiting or falsification due to their legitimacy function. The variety of available types of cards, particularly magnetic stripe cards and smart cards, is testimony to the numerous efforts and various suggestions as to how these conflicting requirements can be properly combined.
The ISO 7810 standard specifies the physical characteristics of identification cards for three different sizes of cards, referred to as ID-I, ID-2 and ID-3. The widest distribution has found the ID-I card with dimensions of 85.60 mm x 53.98 mm, which is used for example in bank and credit cards, phone cards or the EU driving license.
To protect data carriers in ID card format and other formats are often provided with laser-engraved tilting images. In this case, two or more different markings, for example a serial number and an expiration date, are laser-engraved at different angles by an arrangement of cylindrical lenses in the card. The laser radiation generates a local blackening of the card body, which makes the engraved markings visually visible. When looking at it, depending on the viewing angle, only the marking engraved from this direction is visible, so that an optically variable tilting effect is produced by tilting the card perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical lenses.
Based on this, the present invention seeks to provide a security element of the type mentioned above with attractive visual appearance and high security against counterfeiting.
This object is achieved by the security element having the features of the main claim. A method for producing such a security element and a data carrier with such a security element are specified in the independent claims. Further developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
According to the invention, a generic security element contains an optically variable recording layer, which is at least partially provided with a surface relief in the form of a lenticular grid. In this case, at least first and second markings with laser radiation from different directions are introduced through the lens grid into the optically variable recording layer and can be seen in each case from the same directions when viewed. As explained in more detail below, the combination of a lens grid with an optically variable recording layer produces an optically multivariable security element in which the first tilting effect of a laser tilting image and the second tilting effect of an optically variable feature interact with one another and visually enhance each other. The proposed security element thus combines high security against counterfeiting with an appealing visual appearance and a high attention and recognition value.
In an advantageous embodiment, the optically variable recording layer is a color layer with optically variable pigments, in particular with interference layer pigments or liquid crystal pigments. The optically variable recording layer can also be advantageously formed by a diffractive diffraction structure, such as a hologram or a hologram-like diffraction structure, or an achromatic matt structure.
To further increase the security and to achieve attractive visual effects, the optically variable recording layer can additionally be provided with a relief structure.
The markings introduced by the load radiation advantageously represent non-blackened portions of the optically variable recording layer, which are visually recognizable due to their optical properties changed by the laser radiation.
A -In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the lens grid comprises cylindrical lenses and / or spherical lenses. In the most common variants, the lenticular grid is in the form of a horizontal or a vertical lenticular grid.
The optically variable recording layer is expediently separated from the lenticular screen by a transparent spacer layer. It can be arranged on or near the surface, or even inside the security element.
The introduced markings can basically represent any data. Typically, the markings represent personal data such as a signature, a date of birth, a portrait or the like, but may also or additionally contain data carrier related data such as a period of validity, a card number, information on the issuing authority or institution or the like. Rasterized markings are particularly suitable for laser marking. The individual raster elements can be generated in a controlled manner by pulsed irradiation of the recording layer, for example with an Nd: Y AG laser, a Nd: glass laser or else a longer-wavelength CCb laser.
In laser marking, the markings are introduced through the lens grid into the underlying optically variable recording layer. In this case, the laser beam is held at different, predetermined angles to the plane of the lenticular grid, so that when the laser radiation passes through the lenses, different points of the recording layer are modified, but not blackened in accordance with the intention of the invention. The markings introduced in this way and visible through the locally altered optical properties of the recording layer are each essentially only at that angle recognizable under which they were introduced. The size of the angle range under which an identification is recognizable depends on the size of the modified area, and can be adjusted, for example, via the pulse energy of the laser beam. Thus, the data carrier can be provided with two or more different markings that can not be reproduced photographically or with copiers, since at a certain viewing angle, the entire information written is never recognizable.
The markings which can be recognized from different directions are expediently nested in one another in the recording layer. The separation of the information content takes place when viewing the data carrier from the recording directions corresponding viewing directions, since the lens raster shows the viewer only the part of the markings associated with the viewing direction. This makes a technical reproduction of the written information practically impossible, since an exact alignment with a later applied lenticular does not succeed with the required accuracy.

Insgesamt bietet die vorgeschlagene Kombination einer optisch variablen Aufzeichnungsschicht mit einem Laserkippbild in einem Sicherheitselement insbesondere die folgenden Vorteile:Overall, the proposed combination of an optically variable recording layer with a laser tipping image in a security element offers the following advantages in particular:
The tilting effect of the optically variable recording layer is additionally modified by the lenticular of the laser tilting image. Further Combination and variation possibilities and novel visual effects arise when the recording layer is additionally provided with a relief structure.
Conversely, the security against forgery of the optically variable feature also increases as a result of the connection with the lenticular grid, with the result that both partial features mutually enhance each other. Since the optically variable effect of the recording layer is modified by the lenticular grid, the counterfeiting security of the
Overall feature higher than the two separate individual features.
In addition to the security against counterfeiting, the proposed combination also increases the attention and recognition value of the security element. The visual appearance is upgraded and the recognizability of the entire element as an authenticity feature is increased, especially in poor lighting conditions.
The combined security element does not require more space on the card than a laser tipping image alone and therefore can be used on cards with small available area, such as ID-I cards. The larger area remaining due to the merging of two security features also leaves the designer with a greater scope for design.
Further embodiments and advantages of the invention are explained below with reference to the figures. For better clarity, in omitted the figures on a true to scale or proportions representation.

Fig. 2 eine Schnittdarstellung der Karte von Fig. 1 entlang der Linie H-II.Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the card of Fig. 1 taken along the line H-II.
The invention will now be explained using the example of an identification card. 1 shows a schematic representation of an identification card 10 in the ID-I format, as used for example for bank cards, credit cards or driver's licenses.
In addition to conventionally applied, for example imprinted, data 12, the card 10 contains a laser tipping image 14 for securing, which contains two different markings 16 and 18 inscribed by laser radiation, which are schematically represented in FIG. 1 by the character sequences "AAA" and " BBB "are shown. Unlike in the drawing of FIG. 1, the markings 16, 18 when viewing the card 10 not simultaneously, but only by tilting the card 10 in a different tilt angle recognizable. The laser tipping image 14 is embodied in the embodiment in the form of a horizontal lenticular grid, but in other embodiments can also be embodied, for example, in the form of a vertical lenticular grid. Despite the limited space available, cards in the ID-I format are often to be equipped with a laser tipping image as well as with an optically variable effect color print, such as a color layer with optically variable pigments or a hologram. Since the effect color printing requires a certain minimum surface area in order to be able to develop its visual effect, satisfactory results often do not result in known designs due to the necessary compromises.
As a remedy, it is provided in the map 10 that the laser tilting image 14 and the optically variable feature are arranged in the same surface area, as explained in more detail with reference to the cross-sectional view of FIG. 2, which shows a sectional view of the card 10 along the line H-II.
The card 10 contains a card body 20, which is provided in the region of the laser tilting image 14 with an optically variable recording layer 22 and a spacer layer 24 transparent over the recording layer 22. The optically variable recording layer 22 is in the exemplary embodiment a color layer with optically variable pigments, in particular with interference layer pigments or with liquid crystal pigments. In other configurations, the optically variable recording layer may be formed, for example, by a diffractive diffraction structure, such as a hologram or a hologram-like diffraction structure, or a matte structure. Furthermore, the card body itself may be formed of a transparent, semi-transparent or translucent material.
Furthermore, the surface of the card 10 in the region of the laser tilting image 14 is provided with a surface relief in the form of a lenticular grid 26, which in the exemplary embodiment consists of a plurality of horizontal, parallel cylindrical lenses. The tilts introduced into the laser tilting mark 16, 18 were written into the optically variable recording layer 22 only after the application of the lens grid 26 by means of a pulsed infrared laser.
For this purpose, a laser beam from different directions 30 and 32 is directed to the lens grid 26. Depending on the direction of irradiation 30, 32, the individual cylindrical lenses focus the laser beam on different small subregions 40 and 42 of the optically variable recording layer 22. Wavelength, intensity and pulse duration of the laser radiation are matched to the properties of the recording layer 22 such that the subregions 40, 42 are not blackened, but due to their by the laser radiation locally changed optical properties against the background of the non-impacted areas are visually recognizable. The partial areas 40 together form the marking 16 of FIG. 1, the partial areas 42 the markings 18. The appearance of the markings 16, 18 within the optically variable recording layer 22 is visibly more attractive visually than the usual blackened areas of a white card body.
In the later examination of the card 10 from the direction 30, the sub-regions 40 inscribed in this direction can be seen because of the focusing effect of the cylindrical lenses, which form an image for the observer 50, in the exemplary embodiment the letter "AAA" of the marking 16 From the viewing direction 32, the partial areas 42 inscribed in this direction can be recognized and, for the viewer 50, form an image of the letters "BBB" of the marking 18. From the shallower viewing directions 34, 36, the cylindrical lenses each show only portions of the optically variable recording areas which are not modified by laser radiation. layer 22, which contain no markings. In the case of a transparent, semi-transparent or translucent card body 20, the blackening can also be seen from the underside of the card, ie the side facing away from the lenses.
Overall, the laser tilting image 14 of the card 10 thus has an optically double-variable appearance when viewed. The first optically variable effect is given by the tilting effect of the laser tilting image 14: If the card is tilted from the viewing direction 34 over the viewing directions 30 and 32 towards the viewing direction 36, the viewer first sees the recording layer 22 without marking (viewing direction 34). The first marking 16 is visible from the viewing direction 30, then the second marking 18 from the viewing direction 32, until only the recording layer 22 without markings can be recognized again from the viewing direction 36.
The second optically variable effect is generated by the optical variability of the recording layer 22 and depends on the type of the selected recording layer 22. The second optically variable effect may, for example, be a viewing-angle-dependent color-shift effect, which conveys to the viewer a color impression that changes with the viewing direction. Viewing angle dependent diffraction effects, scattering effects or refractive effects are also possible. The refraction of the cylindrical lenses of the lens grid 26 further modifies the second optically variable effect of the recording layer 22 compared to a separately present recording layer.
In advantageous embodiments, the optically variable recording layer 22 may additionally be provided with a relief structure, for example an embossing pattern. be provided structure. In conjunction with the refractive effect of the lens grid 26, this results in impressive visual effects. For example, despite the same incidence of light, different color impressions can be perceived, or the change of the tilting effect by the lenticular grid can produce a three-dimensional appearing, optically variable appearance.
