Definitions
- the present invention generally relates to a writing instrument comprising a barrel extending longitudinally between a front end provided with a writing tip and a rear end, further comprising a gum output device which comprises: an eraser able to assume a maximum output configuration and a retraction configuration in which it is at least partly protected; a gum protection sleeve having a generally cylindrical inner surface movable with respect to the gum is between a first position for which the gum is in the retraction configuration and a second position for which the gum is in the maximum output configuration; an eraser holder to which the eraser is attached, means for permitting relative translation movement between the eraser holder and the sleeve in the longitudinal direction.
- a first category of writing instruments of this type relates to devices in which the rubber support is movable in translation and prohibited from rotation relative to the barrel, and the protective sleeve is rotatable relative to the barrel while being forbidden translation except possibly for the actuation of a mechanism for advancing a writing cartridge.
- the means for prohibiting the rotation of the rubber support relative to the barrel conventionally comprise at least one first longitudinal guiding member such as a groove or a rib provided on the support and cooperating directly with a first complementary longitudinal guiding member provided on a prohibited part of rotation relative to the drum.
- the means for allowing a relative translation movement between the rubber support and the sleeve conventionally comprise at least one second guide member such as a helical groove or a lug provided on the support and cooperating with a second complementary guiding member integral with the muff.
- the rubber support has at the front a tubular projection of polygonal section slidably fitted with contact around a rear portion of the mine reservoir tube which has a section of complementary shape. The translational movement of the rubber support is thus guided with prevention of rotation relative to the mine reservoir tube.
- the rubber support is surrounded throughout its length by the protective sleeve which comprises a tubular projection slidable against the inner wall of the barrel.
- This device however has certain disadvantages, in particular because two tubular elements are arranged radially between the mine reservoir tube and the barrel, which leaves a small central diametral space and penalizes the capacity of the mine reservoir. Radials are required between the tubular members within the barrel so that they can slide against each other, and the multiplicity of these sets compromises the maintenance in axial alignment of the rubber holder with the barrel.
- a second category concerns devices in which the rubber support is prohibited from translation relative to the barrel, except possibly for the actuation of a mechanism for advancing a writing cartridge, and the protective sleeve is movable at less in translation with respect to the barrel.
- the rubber support is generally integrally connected to the rear end of a mine reservoir tube movable in translation in the barrel only for mine advance.
- the eraser support therefore remains stationary in the barrel when the protective sleeve is moved between the retraction configuration and the maximum output configuration of the eraser.
- JP2558803Y2 An example of a writing instrument in this second category is described by the registered Japanese utility model JP2558803Y2, which relates to a mechanical pencil whose lead advance is actuated by a push of the user on the sleeve protection to move the latter in translation with the mine reservoir tube.
- the sleeve has a front portion surrounding the rear end of the barrel.
- the rubber support is integrally connected to the rear end of the reservoir tube by an intermediate tube comprising reliefs cooperating with locking means provided on the sleeve to immobilize the sleeve in one or the other configuration of retraction or maximum output of the eraser.
- the device has certain disadvantages, in particular because the locking means are relatively difficult to manufacture and may also be accidentally unlocked by the user during a scrubbing.
- the device does not include a locking system of the lead advance, which has the consequence that the use of the eraser by holding the writing instrument by the barrel may cause the advancement of the support of gum towards the barrel and thus an undesired lead advance.
- the present invention aims at providing an alternative solution to these prior gum output devices, which in particular makes it possible to simplify the production of the gum output devices both in the first and in the second category mentioned above.
- the subject of the invention is a writing instrument as defined in a general manner in the foregoing, further comprising the following characteristics: the mobility of the protective sleeve with respect to the drum is effected at least in rotation;
- the rubber support is provided with at least one first longitudinal guiding member cooperating directly with a first complementary longitudinal guiding member integral with the barrel to prevent any rotational movement between the support and the barrel, and is provided with at least one a second guiding member cooperating with a second complementary guiding member secured to the sleeve so that the rotation of the sleeve causes the relative translation movement between the support and the sleeve in the longitudinal direction;
- the sleeve has a front portion surrounding the rear end of the barrel and a rear portion not surrounding the barrel which has an inner guide surface having the second complementary guide member;
- the rubber support is able to slide directly against the inner wall of the barrel and has an outer guide surface having the second guide member.
- the barrel comprises stop means capable of cooperating with a front end edge of the sleeve to prevent axial displacement of the sleeve towards the barrel at least in the maximum output configuration of the rubber.
- the outer surface for guiding the rubber support is adjacent to the inner guide surface of the sleeve, and the at least one second guide member is radially projecting outwards and is axially offset towards the rear of the rubber support by report to said at least one first longitudinal guide member; said second complementary guiding member is a groove formed in said inner surface for guiding the sleeve; the rubber support has a front projection extending longitudinally and whose outer surface forms at least approximately a cylinder;
- the groove constituting said second complementary guide member forms a helical path in the inner surface of the guide sleeve, and the rubber holder has two second laterally opposite guide members engaged in said groove.
- the sleeve is connected to the barrel so as to be rotatable relative to the barrel without the possibility of displacement in translation, this arrangement being particularly suitable for a writing instrument whose advance of a writing cartridge is actuated by a push member disposed laterally on the barrel;
- the barrel comprises a rear portion having a substantially cylindrical outer wall surrounded by the front portion of the sleeve and which comprises at least two protuberances arranged in a peripheral circle, said front portion having an inner wall having an annular groove in which said protuberances are engaged ;
- said at least one first longitudinal guiding member is formed by a flat portion extending longitudinally on the outer surface of the front projection of the support, and the rear portion of the barrel has an inner wall on which is formed at least one flat part constituting a said first complementary longitudinal guide member;
- the writing instrument comprises a mechanism for advancing a writing cartridge, the drum comprises a first essentially tabular piece traversed laterally by an actuating button of said feed mechanism and furthermore comprises a second piece essentially tabular comprising the first complementary longitudinal guide member and fixedly connected to said first piece.
- the writing instrument comprises a mechanism for advancing a writing cartridge, the eraser support is integrally connected to a reservoir tube of said advance mechanism disposed inside the barrel coaxially with said support; and able to slide in translation with said support to actuate said feed mechanism;
- the front projection of the rubber support and the outer surface for guiding said support are substantially cylindrical, and the outer diameter of said outer guide surface is greater than the outer diameter of said projection before being substantially equal to the diameter of the inner wall; of the drum:
- said at least one first longitudinal guiding member is formed by a protrusion protruding outwardly on said outer surface for guiding the eraser holder, and a said first complementary longitudinal guiding member is formed by a longitudinal slot formed in the barrel, said slot opening onto the rear end of the barrel and being adapted to allow translational sliding of said protuberance without the possibility of rotation;
- the barrel has a substantially cylindrical outer wall and comprises a rear projection whose outside diameter is smaller than the outside diameter of the barrel, so that the outer surface of the barrel forms an annular shoulder constituting said stop means adapted to cooperate with a front end edge of the sleeve, the front portion of the sleeve having a diameter interior substantially equal to the outer diameter of said rear projection;
- the sleeve is formed by the assembly of two parts, respectively front and rear, having internal guiding surfaces of the same diameter, each inner guiding surface being adjacent to the external guiding surface of the rubber support and having at least one edge constituting a cam path, the respective cam paths of the two parts of the sleeve being shaped such that a groove is created delimited by two cam paths vis-à-vis longitudinally once the two parts assembled, each groove constituting a said second complementary guiding member;
- the rear portion of the sleeve has a substantially circular front opening of a certain diameter and the front portion of the sleeve has a rear projection comprising at least one said cam path, said rear projection having an outer surface defining a cylinder whose diameter is substantially equal to the diameter of the front opening of the rear portion of the sleeve, to allow a friction fit of said rear projection in the rear portion of the sleeve;
- the rear portion of the sleeve comprises two substantially helical and symmetrical cam paths relative to one another with respect to a longitudinal axis, each cam path extending angularly between a first angular positioning element and a second angular positioning element that are diametrically opposed and formed; by projections to the front of the inner guiding surface of said rear portion of the sleeve, and the front portion of the sleeve comprises two substantially helical and symmetrical cam paths with respect to a longitudinal axis between which are formed two diametrically spaced slots opposing means for receiving said first and second angular positioning members;

- the front end edge 55 of the sleeve 50 is positioned substantially in abutment against the annular portion 22 of the sleeve 20. In this way, even in the case of a particularly strong pressure exerted on the eraser while the user holds it. instrument by the barrel, the sleeve remains in position relative to the barrel.
- the sleeve further comprises a rear portion 51 which has an inner guide surface 53 adjacent to the outer guide surface 33 of the gum carrier.
- a groove 52 of generally helical shape, producing a guide path for the lugs 32 of the rubber support 30, is formed on the inner guiding surface 53. The cooperation of the lugs 32 with the groove 52 allows the rotation of the sleeve 50 to cause moving the rubber support 30 relative to the sleeve.
- the front projection 35 of the gum holder 30 has a substantially cylindrical bore 37 open at its forward end and which includes a bottom wall 38 at its rear end. As shown elsewhere on the view in perspective of Figure 9, this bottom wall 38 has a central opening 39 adapted to allow the reloading of mines 3.

- the sleeve 50 has an annular shoulder 56 directed radially inwards at the opening 4 for the passage of the rubber 40 and flush with the surface of the eraser.
- This annular shoulder participates in blocking the rubber in the radial direction, and constitutes an abutment against which the flexible arms 36 of the rubber support 30 abut in the maximum output configuration of the rubber as shown in FIG. 3, thus preventing said carrier out of the sleeve.
- the end of the front projection 35 of the eraser holder remains surrounded by the rear end 25 of the barrel, so that the eraser holder is prevented from rotating.
- the front projection 35 of the rubber support slides directly against the inner wall of the barrel 20, which has the advantage of reinforcing the keeping in axial alignment of the rubber support with the barrel and consequently to limit the alignment deviations the support caused by the efforts transversals exerted on the eraser in use.
- FIG. 4 and 5 another embodiment of a writing instrument according to the invention is partially shown in exploded view, respectively in longitudinal section and in perspective.
- a protective sleeve 150 is formed by assembling two parts, a front portion 150B and a rear portion 150A, and is movable in translation and rotation relative to a barrel 120.
- a clip 151 is formed integrally with the rear portion. 150A of the sleeve, but it is understood that the presence of a clip is not necessary for the invention.
- a rubber support 130 which is prevented from rotating relative to the barrel 120, is able to slide in translation in the barrel only to actuate a mechanism for advancing a writing cartridge (not represented). It has a projection before 135 extending longitudinally and whose outer surface forms a cylinder. It furthermore has a substantially cylindrical outer guide surface 133 whose diameter D 133 is greater than the outside diameter of the front projection 135 and is substantially equal to the diameter D 120 of the inside wall of the barrel 120.
- An annular shoulder 134 is formed at the junction between the outer guide surface 133 and the front projection 135. At a radial extension of this annular shoulder, a first longitudinal guide member 131 is formed by a protuberance projecting externally on the outer guide surface 133.
- two second laterally opposite guide members 132 are each formed by a lug protruding outwardly on the outer guide surface 133. These two lugs 132 are arranged according to a diameter of the cylinder formed by the outer guide surface 133, but it could nevertheless be pre seen a certain shift of the longitudinal position of the lugs.
- the projection before 135 of the rubber support 130 is fitted inside a mine reservoir tube 110 of the writing cartridge, this tube being able to slide in translation inside the barrel 120 to actuate the mechanism advance of the writing cartridge.
- the fitting is carried out so that the mine reservoir tube 110 is integral in translation with the rubber support 130.
- the annular shoulder 134 of the rubber support 130 serves as a stop for the rear end of the reservoir tube 110.
- the front projection of the rubber support has no internal passage and a fitting requiring only moderate effort can be provided so that the user can separate the rubber support with the reservoir tube to reload mines said tube and can reassemble these two elements without particular difficulty.
- the rubber support and the reservoir tube are made in a single tubular part, in which case the outer surface for guiding the support consists of a rear portion of the reservoir tube, and said first guide member. longitudinal and second guide members are preferably made by molding with this tubular piece.

- This slot 121 constitutes a first complementary longitudinal guide member adapted to allow sliding in translation and without the possibility of rotation of the protuberance 131 forming the first longitudinal guiding member of the eraser support 130.
- the outer radius of the protrusion 131 n does not exceed the outer radius of the rear projection 124 of the barrel.
- the front portion 150B and the rear portion 150A of the protective sleeve 150 are provided to be force-fitted into each other so as to avoid any risk of mutual separation under normal conditions of use.
- the front portion 150B has a front portion 154 surrounding the rear end 125 of the barrel.
- This front portion 154 has an internal diameter D 154 substantially equal to the outer diameter of the rear projection 124 of the barrel, so as to slide in translation and in rotation directly against the outer wall of said rear projection 124. It also has an edge end end 155 adapted to abut against an annular shoulder 122 formed on the outer surface of the barrel by the rear projection 124.
- Such abutment positioning is achieved in particular in the maximum output configuration of the eraser, as visible in FIGS. 7a and 7b, which prevents axial displacement of the sleeve 150 towards the barrel 120.
- the front portion 150B of the sleeve further has a rear projection 158 not surrounding the rut and having an outer surface 159 defining a cylinder whose diameter D 159 is substantially equal to the diameter D 152 of a front opening of the rear portion 150A of the sleeve. This makes it possible to friction fit the rear projection 158 in the rear portion 150A.
- the rear projection 158 has an inner guide surface 153 adjacent to the outer guide surface 133 of the eraser support 130, the diameter D 153 of the inner guide surface 153 being substantially equal to the diameter D 133 of the outer guide surface 133
- This inner guide surface 153 has two edges constituting two cam paths 152B1, 152B2 substantially helical and symmetrical to each other with respect to a longitudinal axis, between which are formed two diametrically opposite slots 157B1, 157B2, as can also be seen in the view. perspective of Figure 12.
- each slot 157B1, 157B2 is greater than or equal to the diameter of each lug 132 of the rubber holder 130, so that the front portion 150B of the sleeve can be engaged around the rubber holder by the rear of the latter by passing each lug through a slot.
- the outer radius of the protuberance 131 of the eraser support 130 is less than or equal to the inner diameter D 154 of the front portion 154, to allow the front portion 150B to engage around the eraser support. This engagement is completed when the protuberance 131 abuts against an annular shoulder inside the front portion 150B at the junction between the front portion 154 and the rear projection 158. It is understood that the width of the protuberance 131 may be greater than that each slot 157B1, 157B2, since it is not necessary that the protuberance 131 can pass through one of these slots.
- the rear portion 150A of the sleeve has an inner guide surface 153 of the same diameter D 153 as that of the inner surface for guiding the rear projection 158 of the front portion 150B of the sleeve.
- This inner guiding surface 153 is adjacent to the outer guiding surface 133 of the rubber support 130, and as for the front portion 150B, has two edges constituting two cam paths 152Al and 152A2 substantially helical and symmetrical to each other with respect to a longitudinal axis.
- Each cam path 152A1, 152A2 extends angularly less than 180 ° between a first angular positioning member 157A1 and a second angularly opposed positioning member 157A2.
- each angular positioning member 157Al, 157A2 consists of a projection formed in front of the inner guide surface 153 of said rear portion 150A and which has an end in the form of a rib whose width is substantially equal to the width of a slot 157B1, 157B2.
- each angular positioning member 157Al, 157A2 is adapted to engage in a corresponding slot 157Bl, 157B2.
- the engagement of the angular positioning members of the rear portion in the corresponding slots of the front portion makes it possible to firmly prevent any relative rotation between the front portion and the rear portion.
- the respective cam paths of the two parts of the sleeve are shaped such that two grooves 152 substantially helical and symmetrical with each other with respect to a longitudinal axis are created, each groove being delimited by two cam paths vis-à-vis longitudinally once the two parts of the sleeve are assembled.
- Each lug 132 constituting a second guide member of the rubber support 130 is engaged in a groove 152 constituting a second complementary guide member. In this way, the rotation of the sleeve 150 causes a translation movement of the sleeve relative to the rubber support.
- the guide in translation of the sleeve is provided thanks firstly to the sliding of the front portion 154 of the sleeve around the rear projection 124 of the barrel and secondly to the sliding of the inner guide surface 153 of the sleeve around the surface external guide 133 of the eraser support. Note that the rear end 125 of the barrel still remains surrounded by the front portion 154 of the sleeve. It is not necessary for the invention that the protective sleeve is made in two parts.
- a one-piece protective sleeve having an inner wall which comprises at least one groove constituting a said second complementary guiding member, the engagement in the groove of at least one said second guiding member of the rubber support such that a lug being made by elastic deformation of said inner wall and / or said second guide member.
- each second guide member may be provided as an extension of the first longitudinal guiding member of the rubber support in the radial direction.
- modifications to be made to the previously described embodiment (FIGS. 4 and 5) to arrive at this other embodiment would consist in particular in providing that the rear projection 124 of the barrel 120 is interposed radially between the external guiding surface 133 of the gum carrier and the inner guide surface 153 of the sleeve, by extending said rear projection 124 and increasing the diameter D1 53 of said inner guide surface.
- the sleeve 150 can be moved to a first position for which the eraser 140 is in the retraction configuration.
- a first longitudinal spacing is provided between the leading end edge 155 of the sleeve and the annular shoulder 122 of the barrel, and a second Longitudinal spacing is provided between the protrusion 131 of the eraser holder 130 and the forward end of the longitudinal slot 121 of the barrel wherein the protuberance 131 is slidable to actuate the advance mechanism of the write cartridge.
- the rear portion 150A of the sleeve has an annular shoulder 156 of relatively small radial thickness, directed inwards at the opening for the passage of the rubber 140 and flush with the surface of the rubber.
- the rubber support 130 has at the rear a tabular projection 136 of radial thickness substantially equal to that of the annular shoulder 156 and adapted to hold a portion of the gum 140 enclosed.
- a third longitudinal spacing is provided between the tabular projection. 136 and the annular shoulder 156, greater than or equal to the first longitudinal spacing so as not to prevent abutment of the front end edge 155 of the sleeve against the annular shoulder 122 of the barrel in the maximum output configuration of the eraser as shown in Figure 7a.
- a pressure exerted on the rubber 140 or on the sleeve 150 in the direction of the barrel 120 causes the translational sliding of the rubber support 130 and consequently the actuation of the advance mechanism of the writing cartridge.
- the stroke of this translation is limited by the abutment of the front end edge 155 of the sleeve against the annular shoulder 122 of the barrel or by the abutment of the protuberance 131 against the front end of the slot 121 of the barrel .
- the rubber support 130 slides directly against the inner wall of the rear projection 124 of the drum, which has the advantage of reinforcing the keeping in axial alignment of the rubber support with the drum and consequently to limit the differences in alignment of the support caused by the transverse forces exerted on the eraser in use.
- the sleeve 150 can be moved to a second position for which the eraser 140 is in the maximum output configuration.
- This second position is obtained from the first position by a rotation of the sleeve 150 about its longitudinal axis in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 6b.
- the sleeve 150 and the clip have been rotated more than 90.degree.
- the position of which was marked by the virtual line L in the alignment of the slot 121 remaining unchanged.
- the maximum output configuration of the eraser 140 therefore corresponds to a position of the sleeve providing locking of the advance of the writing cartridge, which has the particular advantage of allowing the user to use the eraser by holding the writing instrument entirely or at least in part by the 120 without risk of causing an unwanted advance of the cartridge.
- the protective sleeve may be proportionally shorter compared to the was in comparison with the embodiment relating to Figures la and Ib.
- Such a locking allows a return spring having a relatively low stiffness is provided for the write cartridge so that the actuation of the cartridge advance mechanism requires less effort to the user, which also allows to reduce the weight and cost of the return spring.
- the writing instrument according to the invention described in the preceding embodiments is of the type pencil, but it is understood that the invention is not limited to the use of a writing cartridge to mines.
- the invention can indeed be applied to a writing instrument comprising an erasable ink cartridge with an eraser.
- the writing cartridge comprises a reservoir tube that can be actuated to slide in a drum.
- the writing cartridge can be provided integral with a fixed writing tip.
