Definitions

  • This invention relates to a device for opening and closing the delivery opening of a container of sheet material, in which the delivery opening is initially sealed by a film of perforatable material, comprising a tubular base sleeve which is open at both extremities and is attached at one extremity in a leaktight way to the wall of the container around the delivery opening in axial alignment therewith, a cap with an end wall and a tubular skirt positioned coaxially on the said sleeve and engaging therewith through threaded means positioned so as to open and close the free extremity of the said base sleeve, together with means for tearing the said film on the occasion of the first opening operation.
  • the means for tearing the film with which the delivery opening of the container is initially sealed comprise a series of small blades with a free extremity facing the film which is to be torn, supported by a tubular wall which is concentric with the skirt of the cap positioned within the sleeve and integral with the cap, which is in turn screwed onto the outer wall of the sleeve.
  • this and its inner coaxial wall are displaced axially towards the sealed opening of the container.
  • the means for tearing the film which seals the delivery opening of the container comprise a plurality of points facing the film which has to be torn which are borne by a fixed curved sector attached to the inner wall of the tubular sleeve placed around the delivery opening of the container through a flexible peduncle.
  • the known device also comprises cam means located between the cap and the peduncle of the curved point-bearing sector. When the cap is moved angularly to open the delivery opening for the first time, these cam means cause the peduncle to bend and therefore the points in the sector to approach the sealing film until they penetrate the film and tear it.
  • the sector with the points and the corresponding peduncle also remain attached to the inside of the sleeve transversely to its longitudinal axis after the delivery opening has been opened for the first time, constituting an obstacle to free delivery of the contents.
  • the object of this invention is to provide a device for closing and opening the delivery opening of a container of sheet material which makes it possible to perforate the film sealing the delivery opening at the time when it is first opened through means for tearing the film which reduce the formation of waste of the material of which the film is produced and which retain the torn parts of the film, preventing them from falling into the container.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide the opening and closing device and the means for tearing the sealing film with a structure which can be manufactured from plastics material using simple and therefore not very expensive moulds.
  • 1 indicates as a whole a base sleeve comprising a tubular body 2 with open extremities 2a and 2b.
  • a thread 3 is provided on outer wall 2c of body 2.
  • Sleeve 1 also comprises a plate-shaped base member 4 through which the sleeve is fitted to wall 5 of a container 6 at an opening 7 for delivery of the product present within the container.
  • the container which is of the type conventionally manufactured of sheet material such as for example plastic-coated cardboard, can adopt various configurations, for example cubic, rectangular, tetrahedral and the like.
  • a film 7a of perforatable material for example a thin sheet of aluminium adhesive bonded or welded to wall 5 of container 6.
  • 8 indicates as a whole the cap according to this invention.
  • This comprises an end wall 9 and a tubular skirt 10 on the inner wall of which is provided a thread 11 designed to engage thread 3 of body 2.
  • the outer wall of skirt 10 has extensions 12 conferring a quadrilateral shape upon the cap which is an advantage when gripped by the fingers of a user when it is necessary to unscrew or screw up the cap to open and close delivery opening 7 of the container.
  • End wall 9 of cap 8 is provided with a circular opening 13 in which there is housed a cylindrical piston member 14 whose extremity 14a is closed, and when the piston member is in its raised position, as will be more particularly described below, it is substantially coplanar with wall 9 of the cap.
  • free extremity 15 of piston member 14 has a crown of cutting members which are in the form of triangular teeth 16 in the embodiment illustrated.
  • a rod-shaped member 17 which is tubular with a circular transverse cross-section in the example illustrated.
  • ribs 19 which extend radially and axially and which are used to retain a dose of adhesive, indicated diagrammatically by 21, close to the free extremity 20 of member 17, designed to hold portion 7b of the sealing film which after tearing is separated from the remainder of film 7a and if which not held would fall within container 6.
  • Piston member 14 is axially guided by a rib 22 borne by a collar 23 which is integral with skirt 10, with which it is coaxial.
  • the attachment to skirt 10 takes place through end wall 9 of cap 8.
  • the seal between rib 22 and the cylindrical wall of piston member 14 is ensured by a circumferential lip 24 which is integral with the rib and projects therefrom.
  • the said collar 23 is provided with another annular rib 25 positioned close to opening 13 which engages an annular edge 26 projecting from end wall 14a of piston member 14.
  • Rib 25 and annular edge 26 engage when a particular axial thrust is imparted to end wall 14a, for example by means of the user's finger, to push piston member 14 towards opening 7 and sealing film 7a.
  • Rib 25 therefore establishes the raised position of piston member 14 and prevents its accidental descent, for example during transport, such as to prejudice the integrity of the seal.
  • rib 25 prevents piston member 14 from returning the initial position after it has descended and torn sealing film 7a, thus contributing to the "evidence of opening" purpose of piston member 14.
  • this rib 25 renders any forced action to return piston member 14 to its initial position after sealing film 7a has been torn extremely difficult.
  • the lowered position of piston member 14 on collar 23 is determined by a step 27 of rib 22 against which annular edge 26 abuts on completion of the axial movement.
  • step 27 is determined in such a way as to cause piston member 14 to stop after the crown of cutting members 16 has cut sealing film 7a, cutting from it a portion 7b which remains attached to the extremity 20 of member 17 through adhesive 21 located between ribs 19.
  • Portion 7b of the sealing film is therefore prevented from entering container 6 when opening 7 is opened for the first time. At the same time, because of the pointed shape of cutting members 16, the formation of waste of the material comprising film 7a is avoided.
  • the device according to the invention also comprises a warranty sealing member comprising, as may be seen in Figure 7, a tongue 28 fixed to the perimeter of cap 8 through breakable bridges 29. Tongue 28 is retained in position on the body of base 4 through nesting means indicated as a whole by 30 and 30a. At the time of first opening rotation of cap 8 causes bridges 29 to break and therefore warranty tongue 28 to separate, providing evidence of the fact that the cap has been opened for the first time.
  • end wall 14a of piston member 14 which can be seen from the outside may be used to bear incisions, as indicated diagrammatically by 31, relating to advertising or other messages.
