  2. A process according to claim 1
    characterised in that in step a) the recesses (4) are produced in the base material (2) in the form of grooves.
  3. A process according to claim 1 or claim 2
    characterised in that in step a) the recesses (4) are provided in the base material (2) substantially over the entire thickness or depth thereof.
  4. A process according to at least one of the preceding claims characterised in that the base material (2) comprises wood.

  16. Apparatus for carrying a process according to at least one of the preceding claims
    characterised by
    - first means for producing preferably elongate recesses (4) in a substantially solid flat base material (2),
    - second means for filling hardenable material (6) in the fluid condition into the recesses (4), and
    - third means for cutting the base material (2) along the recesses (4) filled with the material (6) which has then hardened in order thereby to expose the hardened material (6a, 6b) as a lateral connecting means (12a, 12b).
  17. Apparatus according to claim 16 for carrying out the process according to one of claims 5 to 7
    characterised by
    - fourth means for machining, preferably cutting machining, of the lateral connecting means (12a) which is formed from the exposed hardened material (6a) in order to impart thereto a shape suitable for engagement with a lateral connecting means (12b) of another flat element (10).
  18. Apparatus according to claim 17 or claim 18 for carrying out a process according to claim 12 or claim 13
    characterised by
    - fifth means for briefly heating at least one lateral connecting means (12a, 12b) formed by the hardened material (6a, 6b) on at least one flat element (10) in order for connecting at least two flat elements (10) to fuse same to the side of the other flat element (10).
  19. Apparatus according to at least one of claims 16 to 18 for carrying out a process according to claim 14
