  • This invention relates to a foldable worksurface which, when not in use, can be stowed away in a furniture unit, and particularly but not exclusively to a foldable table for stowing away in a furniture unit when not in use.
  • Foldable tables are known and are particularly useful where space in a particular locality is limited. However, the foldable table can also take up valuable space and appear unsightly when not in use. In order to overcome this problem it has previously been proposed to connect the foldable table to an item of furniture, thereby allowing the foldable table to be folded and stowed in the furniture unit when not in use.
  • One such foldable table is disclosed in CA959906 and forms part of a kitchen cabinet. When stored the table resembles a drawer of the cabinet. A plurality of table leaves are attached to the back of the drawer and the table leaves can be arranged in use to form a worksurface.
  • One or more foldable legs are provided in connection with the base of the leaves and can be unfolded and located on the ground for supporting the leaves when the leaves are in a fully extended position from the cabinet.
  • the leaves are provided on telescopic arms which allow the leaves attached to the drawer to be moved in and out of the cabinet.
  • a foldable worksurface said foldable worksurface connected to a furniture unit and capable of being folded and stored in a cavity of the furniture unit when not in use, said worksurface and/or said furniture unit provided with movement means for moving said worksurface between a first stored position, wherein the worksurface is folded and located in the cavity of said furniture unit, and a second position, wherein the folded worksurface extends from said furniture unit, said folded worksurface capable of being unfolded when in said second extended position, and characterised in that said movement means are directly or indirectly connected to an interior surface or surfaces of said furniture unit defining said cavity via frame means.
  • the frame means is in the form of a cradle with support arms provided substantially parallel with and/or transversely of said movement means.
  • the cradle provides the structure of the table with greater rigidity and support than if the movement means were connected directly to the interior walls of the furniture unit.
  • the worksurface typically folds and is stored above the cradle/frame when not in use.
  • the cradle itself is positioned in a locating sleeve to allow accurate retrofit into an existing furniture unit.
  • the frame means can be an integral part of said furniture unit or can be secured thereto via conventional securing means, such as via adhesive, screws, nuts and bolts and/or the like.
  • the worksurface is provided with handle means via which the user is able to move the worksurface in and/or out of the cavity of the furniture unit.
  • said movement means includes any or any combination of telescopic arms, draw runners, rollers, a ball bearing mechanism and/or the like.
  • the movement means are connected to either the frame means in the furniture unit or the underside or side of the worksurface and complementary movement means are provided on the other of the frame means or worksurface.
  • the furniture unit is provided with closure means to close the entrance/exit to said cavity in said furniture unit.
  • the closure means is in the form of a conventional drawer or cupboard front, thereby providing the appearance of a normal furniture unit when the foldable table is in the first position and not in use.
  • the closure means is typically substantially hidden from view when the worksurface is in the unfolded, extended position.
  • closure means is pivotally mounted to said frame/cradle via pivot means.
  • the pivot means includes one or more hinges, such as a crank hinge or a 170 degree concealed hinge.
  • the hinge is a sprung hinge.
  • the closure means is in the form of a drawer front or fronts and the drawer front is pivoted away from and downwardly relative to said cradle/frame to allow the worksurface to be extended from the furniture unit.
  • the drawer fronts are therefore located underneath the worksurface when in an unfolded position.
  • the closure means has one or more handles provided on a front surface thereof to actuate the pivot mechanism.
  • closure means has engagement means via which the closure means can be secured to the furniture unit when the worksurface is in the first folded/stored position to close the closure means.
  • the foldable worksurface includes one or more leaves which when in use are located in an end to end manner to form an elongate worksurface.
  • the two leaves are typically hinged together to allow the leaves to be folded one on top of the other, to form a stack in said first folded position, and unfolded and adjacent to each other in said extended and unfolded position.
  • the foldable worksurface includes two leaves.
  • one or more support legs are connected to the underside of the worksurface/leaves.
  • the support leg or legs are pivotally mounted to said leaves, thereby allowing the leg or legs to be moved between a folded position, where the legs are parallel and adjacent the underside surface of the leaf or leaves, and an unfolded position, where the legs are substantially perpendicular to the worksurface and are in contact with a floor surface.
  • the foldable worksurface is in the form of a table, ironing board and/or the like.
  • the leaves of the worksurface can be any shape but in a preferred embodiment the leaf adjacent the free end of the worksurface is rounded or semicircular in shape for improving the aesthetic appearance thereof and increase the seating area at the front of the table.
  • the worksurface is provided with locking means for locking the same in the second unfolded position.
  • the locking means can include a resiliently biased locking pin which locates with a correspondingly shaped aperture, a user actuable lever which is movable between locked and unlocked position or a locking arm which is rotatably mounted directly or indirectly to a portion of the worksurface and a complementary shaped aperture provided on the frame means, and typically a front portion of the frame means, for receiving a portion of the locking arm when the worksurface is in said second unfolded position.
  • the locking arm is caused to rotate for engagement in said aperture on the frame means.
  • the locking arm is typically provided on a rotatable member.
  • the rotatable member can also include movement limiting means which, in one example, includes a protruding member movable in a slot provided on plate means, the plate means being attached directly or indirectly to the movement means. Movement of the worksurface with respect to the furniture unit causes movement of the plate means with respect to the rotatable member, thereby causing said protruding member to slide in said slot and cause rotation of the rotatable member.
  • a furniture unit having a foldable worksurface located therewith, said furniture unit being provided with a cavity in the interior thereof in which said foldable worksurface is capable of being stored when not in use, said worksurface and/or said furniture unit provided with movement means for moving said worksurface between a first stored position, wherein the worksurface is folded and located in the cavity of said furniture unit, and a second position, wherein the folded worksurface extends from said furniture unit, said folded worksurface capable of being unfolded when in said second position and characterised in that said movement means are directly or indirectly connected to an interior surface or surfaces of said furniture unit defining said cavity via frame means.
  • the second position is a partially extended position wherein the worksurface then need to be unfolded in order for it to be moved to a fully extended position.
  • the furniture unit is in the form of a kitchen cabinet/ cupboard.
  • the dimensions of the furniture unit and foldable worksurface can be varied according to the dimensions of the space in which the unit and/or worksurface is/are to be located.
  • the furniture unit typically forms part of a set of modular kitchen units.
  • the foldable worksurface of the present invention has the advantage that it can provide an increase in worksurface area when required but can be stored away when an increase in free space is required. This is of particular use in small apartments and/or the like where space is limited.
  • a hinge preferably a 170° concealed hinge
  • the door panel can be hinged directly to the cradle and there is no loss of storage space, as is the case with conventional arrangements.
  • the space below the cradle/frame is free for storage and is not required to be left empty for movement of the worksurface in and out thereof.
  • the cabinets include cupboards 4, drawer units 6, 8 and 10 and a worksurface 12.
  • the drawer unit 10 comprises a front plate provided with a handle 11.
  • the front plate is hinged by a 170° concealed hinge 14 to a front section of a frame/cradle 30 attached to the worksurface 12, thereby allowing the drawer unit front plate to be pulled in a direction away from and downwardly relative to the cabinet, through approximately 170 degrees. This allows a user to gain access to the foldable table stored in the cavity 18 behind the drawer unit front plate 10.
  • the drawer unit front plate 10 is typically in a closed position and is secured to the top of the drawer unit frame by magnetic means, sprung hinges, clip means and/or similar (not shown).
  • the foldable table 20 comprises two table leaves 22 and 24 and foldable table legs 26 (only one of which is shown for purposes of clarity).
  • the table leaf 22 is supported by arms 28 provided adjacent opposite edges thereof.
  • the top surface of leaf 24 is located on the top surface of leaf 22 and table leg 26 is located adjacent and parallel with the underside of leaf 24.
  • Table leaf 22 and 24 are joined together by hinges 34, thereby allowing leaf 24 to be pivoted through 180 degrees in the direction of arrow 36, from the partially folded position shown in Figure 2a to the unfolded and fully extended position shown in figure 2b.
  • Leg 26 is also hinged to the underside surface of leaf 24 and the hinge 38 allows the leg to be moved between the folded position shown in figure 2a to the fully extended position shown in figure 2b.
  • Locking mechanisms can be provided on the leg and the hinged leaves to lock the legs and leaves in the folded and/or unfolded positions.
  • the table leaves locking mechanism includes complementary locking rails 40 and 42 located on the underside of leaf 22 and leaf 24 respectively, and a locking member 44 in the form of a rotatable arm. Locking arm 44 is secured to table leaf 22 by pivot 48, and is rotatable thereabout as shown by arrows 49, between locked and unlocked positions, as shown in figures 6b and 6c respectively.
  • the locking rails 40, 42 are secured to the underside of the table leaves by conventional fixing means, such as screws or adhesive.
  • the rails 40, 42 are wedge shaped and the end opposing faces are tapered away from each other, thereby providing an inclined end which is complementary to the inclined ends of the locking arm 44.
  • the complementary shaped ends provide engagement of the locking arm 44 between the locking rails 40, 42, to secure the table leaves together in the unfolded position (i.e. the locking rails limit the movement of the locking member between the locked and unlocked positions).
  • the locking mechanism can comprise one or more locking pins which are located in complementary shaped apertures/recesses on the locking rail to lock the legs or leaves in the unfolded position.
  • the locking rails 40 and 42 can be provided with any shaped recess on an end thereof to allow engagement with complementary shaped ends of the locking arm 44.
  • a cradle/frame 30 is provided in connection with the interior surface of the cabinet 2, onto which drawer runners 32 are attached.
  • the cradle 30 is substantially square to provide sufficient support and rigidity for the drawer runners 32 and to ensure smooth movement of the table leaves into and out of the cavity.
  • Cradle 30 comprises two substantially parallel bottom rails 50 secured to the front and back walls of the cabinet 2, and two substantially parallel mounting rails 52 located substantially perpendicular to the bottom rails 50.
  • Mounting rails 52 are secured to the bottom rails 50 by conventional securing means, such as screws 54 and/or the like.
  • the mounting rails 52 can optionally be secured to the cabinet if required in addition to, or as an alternative, to being secured to the bottom rails.
  • Optional side rails 56 (shown by dotted lines in figure 4) can also be provided to add strength to the cradle.
  • the drawer runners 32 are the movement means by which the foldable table is moved between an unfolded and out of use position where the table is located in the cavity and is folded, and a fully extended position where the table is pulled out from within the cavity and can be unfolded.
  • the drawer runners are in the form of telescopic arms which have a first portion secured to the mounting rails 52 and a second portion secured to the table mounting rails 28. The telescopic arms are slidable relative to each other, thereby allowing the table leaves to be slid in and out of cavity 18 of the cabinet 2.
  • the drawer runners include a plurality of ball bearing members. Arms 28 on the table leaf 22 are in the form of channels with the U- or V- shape of the channel facing the drawer runners.
  • the ball bearing members of the drawer runners are slidably located in the U- or V-shaped channels, thereby allowing table leaf 22 to be slid from a folded position in the cavity into the extended position shown in Figure 1. Once leaf 22 is in the extended position shown in figure 1, leaf 24 can be unfolded by moving the same through 180 degrees, as according to arrow 36, and locked in place.
  • a table locking mechanism 46 can be provided to lock the table in the extended, unfolded position during use.
  • An example of a possible locking mechanism according to an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in figures 3a-3c.
  • Locking mechanism 100 includes a plate 102 attached to mounting rail 28 via screw attachment 104.
  • the plate 102 is provided with an inclined slot 106 at one end thereof in which a protrusion member 108 of a rotatable wheel 110 is slidably located.
  • the rotatable wheel 110 is provided in a housing 112 and is freely rotatable therein about fixing 114.
  • the housing 112 is mounted to the underside of the table leaf 22.
  • a locking arm 116 having a flange portion 118 at a free end thereof is attached to or integrally formed with rotatable wheel 110.
  • protrusion member 108 is caused to slide from a first end 120 of slot 106 to a second end 122 of slot 106, as shown in figures 3a and 3b. Movement of protrusion member 108 in slot 106 causes wheel 110 to rotate about fixing 114 in an anticlockwise direction, as shown by arrows 124. This causes locking arm 116 to move from a substantially vertical, unlocked position, as shown in figure 3a, to a substantially horizontal, locked position, as shown in figure 3b and by arrows 126. Flange portion 118 engages in a complementary shaped aperture 128 provided on cradle 30 in the locked position in figure 3b. A sliding bolt 130 is provided on housing 112 to allow a user to further secure the table in the locked position.
  • FIG. 7a-7c An alternative locking mechanism 200 is illustrated in figures 7a-7c in which a sprung locking pin 202 is provided on mounting rail 28 for locating in a correspondingly shaped aperture 203 provided on cradle 30. More specifically, locking pin 202 is resiliently biased by spring 204 in a downwardly direction or in a direction from mounting rail 28 towards cradle 30 located therebelow. The spring 204 and locking pin 202 are movably located in a housing 206 provided in mounting rail 28. A user actuation lever 208 is provided on an upper portion of pin 202 to allow a user to lift pin 202 from aperture 203 for unlocking of the mechanism.
  • the actuation lever 208 could be used to move pin 202 between the locked and unlocked positions without the requirement of spring 204 if required.
  • an upper edge 210 of cradle 30 can be provided with a taper which meets aperture 203, thereby increasing the ease with which the locking mechanism can be actuated.
  • the components of the locking mechanism are typically formed from metal.
  • the locking mechanism allows locking of the table in the unfolded position automatically without the user being required to fiddle with a manual actuated lock. This is particularly advantageous for elderly or frail people who may not be able to find and actuate a lock on the underside of the table.
  • the size and shape of the table can be altered according to the space available and the user's requirements.
  • the number of compartments, drawer units and cupboards which form part of the furniture unit can vary according to the user's requirements.
  • FIGS. 8a-8b there is illustrated a further embodiment of the present invention in which the cradle 30 is located in a mounting sleeve 302. Suitable apertures 304 are provided in mounting sleeve 302 to allow the same to be fixed to an interior surface of a furniture unit.
  • the mounting sleeve is typically formed from metal but can be provided from any material as required.
  • table leaves can be provided and these can be hinged in a similar manner to the leaves described above or can be joined via attachment means to the free end of table leaf 24.
  • the rail members 28 can be mounted directly to the underside of the table leaves or they can be secured to the table via mounting timbers/frame members.
  • the present invention provides a secure and easy to use mechanism for moving and folding/unfolding the table/worksurface which has a reduced number of components compared to prior art foldable tables.
