Abstract

The inlet (6) of the silencer (1) has a tapered reducing piece (4,5) leading into the perforated tube (2). The concentric space (8) between the inner and outer tubes acts as an expansion chamber. Some of the exhaust gases flow through the perforations and are released to the outside through vanes (17) at the outlet (19) end of the silencer. There may be a large-diameter pipe surrounding these vanes. The vanes are made by bending the edges of discs (14) which have openings (11,18) in them to allow exhaust gases to flow through.
