Description

The technical sector of the present invention is that devices to mask emissions from hot springs of a combat vehicle.

We know that a battle tank can be spotted by its radar and infrared emissions thanks to means of appropriate detection. Very little work has been done at the exhaust gas ejection and we thought so far just play on the orientation of the exit of these gases. The arrival on the market of more detectors performance forces military vehicle designers to review the infrared and radar emission problems of these vehicles.

This is why the invention aims to decrease considerably the infrared and radar emission of a military vehicle to make it more difficult detectable by the emission of its exhaust gases.

The subject of the invention is therefore a device for masking the exhaust gases of a military vehicle with respect to an infrared or radar sensor, characterized in that it comprises a rigid frame and a flexible multispectral veil, the frame receiving two side walls and an upper wall, the web being made of a foam material on which a flame retardant fabric is applied and being connected to the rigid frame by fixing means.
The fixing means consist of a set of arms each articulated with respect to the frame.
The foam material consists of polyethylene. Electromagnetic shielding is applied to one side of the foam material.
The shielding is in the form of a metal grid, for example a net or a canvas.

A layer of waterproof flame retardant textile fabric is applied to each side of the foam material.

A reflective layer of infrared radiation is arranged on one of the layers of fabric.

The foam material has a thickness of the order of 2 cm and a low density, of the order of 50 to 150 kg / m 3 . A very first advantage of the invention lies in the negligible impact of the device on the mass and size of the vehicle.

Another advantage of the invention lies in the use of a commercially available product including we modify the multispectral masking properties by addition of layers of suitable material.

Yet another advantage is the use of the flexibility of the flexible material without degrading vehicle environment and mobility.

Other characteristics, advantages and details of the invention will appear more clearly on reading the additional description which follows of an embodiment given by way of example in relation to the drawings in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a view of the rear part of a vehicle showing the installation of the device according to the invention,
  • FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the masking device,
  • Figure 3 is a section of the multilayer flexible material used in the invention.

There is shown in Figure 1 the rear part of a military vehicle 1 whose exhaust gases from its engine are ejected via a tube 2. To reduce the infrared and radar emissivity of this vehicle, a masking device 3 is fixed at the rear, according to the Figures 1 and 2, to deflect the gases to the ground. The device 3 consists of a rigid frame 4 receiving two side walls 5a and 5b and a wall upper 6. The fixing of the walls and the veil can be permanent (glue, staples, rivets) or removable (screws, wall hook type Velcro, registered trademark). Wall 6 can be made up of one or more panels. All reinforcement / side walls / top wall constitutes a rigid structure or cage on which one comes to fix a flexible veil 7 by means of a fixing means 8. This means 8 is here constituted by a set of arms 9 each articulated with respect to the rigid frame 4 around a hinge 10. Each arm can be rigid or flexible. The hinge can be fitted with a return spring to constantly bring the arm towards the vehicle 1. On the Figure 1, we see that we have along the free edge of the armature 4 a certain number of arms 8 on which we are going fix the flexible veil 7 by any known means, either in single length be in several panels. Isolation of the cage can be improved by applying panels 15, 16 and 17 respectively on faces 5a, 5b and 6 likewise nature than the veil 7.

In Figure 3, there is shown a cross section of the veil 7 and we see that it is made of a flexible material composed of several layers. The main element of this veil consists of a layer of foam material 11, for example polyethylene, on which is applied according to the invention on one side a layer 12 of fireproof and waterproof textile fabric and on the other side first electromagnetic shielding 13, then a layer 14 of fireproof and waterproof textile fabric, then finally a layer 15 reflecting infrared radiation. The latter may be in the form of a layer of metallized paint, a metallic film or a metallized plastic film. The shield 13 may be a metal grid in the form of a net or a canvas of metal wires, for example stainless steel, bronze or copper, the mesh of which is adapted to the frequency of the radar emission to be processed. An electromagnetic barrier to radar emissions is thus produced. The foam material 11 is made of a very light material in the form of a plate approximately 2 cm thick with a low density, of the order of 50 to 150 kg / m 3 . The layer 12 or 14 of textile fabric can be dyed with paints meeting the requirements of the NATO or GAM C specifications, stealth paints in the infrared (bands II and III) in order to ensure a variegation in the visible and the infrared . A flexible multispectral material is thus obtained.

The veil 7 is fixed on the arms 9 by arranging the face metallized towards the vehicle and constitutes an excellent barrier to infrared exhaust emissions from vehicle and an electromagnetic trap for radiation radar detectors. This keeps all the flexibility of the web 7 as well as its mechanical characteristics. Of more, the masking device thus produced respects the environmental and mobility constraints of the vehicle military by offering completely multispectral masking satisfactory. Of course, given the density of the material, there is only a small impact on the mass of the vehicle.
