Abstract
The invention proposes a steering wheel (10) for controlling a motor vehicle in particular, which is fitted with a device that detects the elastic deformation of the steering wheel (10) covering caused by pressure from the driver and which uses this deformation to control driver-activated functions. To this end, a fibre optic sensor is fitted to the steering wheel (10). This sensor has an optical fibre (14) into which a transmitter (16) injects a light signal (16.1) which is picked up by a sensor (18). Changes in the pressure or force being exerted on the optical fibre (14) bring about a change of polarisation in the light signal (16.1) which is evaluated by an evaluation circuit (15) to form a driver signal (20.x).

Stand der TechnikState of the art
The invention is based on a steering wheel according to the preamble of claim 1. Steering wheels of this type are conventionally known.
In einem in dieser Druckschrift beschriebenenFrom DE 33 11 524 AI particularly suitable fiber-optic sensors are known for force and pressure measurements or for monitoring and security purposes. In one described in this document
Application example from automotive technology, such fiber optic sensors are used in the window frame or in the front of an electrically operated window. Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
In contrast, the invention is based on the idea of using a fiber optic sensor for the targeted triggering of vehicle-side functions, for example of lights, horns, wipers etc. by the driver. In order to enable the driver to keep his hands on the steering wheel when operating these functions, the sensor is expediently arranged on the steering wheel, in particular on the steering wheel rim. The functions are triggered by an increased pressure impulse from the driver on the steering wheel rim.
Die dadurch entfallenenIn an expansion stage of a sensor system of this type, grip sequences could be defined from a plurality of pressure pulses in quick succession, by means of which even several different vehicle-side devices can be controlled with a single sensor. Hierbei ist insbesondere eineFrom the basic signal of the fiber optic sensor, which inevitably results from the driver's grip on the steering wheel, the driver can be monitored in parallel to the triggering functions with little additional effort.
Driving time monitoring or sleep detection possible. If the vehicle is moving and the steering wheel is not gripped, for example as a result of falling asleep, an alarm is triggered or the vehicle is stopped. Further advantages or advantageous further developments result from the subclaims or the description.
Zeichnungdrawing
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and explained in more detail in the following description.
Figure 1 shows in simplified form the arrangement of the fiber optic sensor and the evaluation circuit on a steering wheel. FIG. 2 shows the essential components for signal generation, acquisition and evaluation in a schematic signal flow diagram.
Beschreibungdescription
Der Sender 16 und der Aufnehmer 18 sind in einerThe steering wheel 10 shown in FIG. 1 has an annular steering wheel rim 11, which is connected to a centrally arranged steering wheel hub 13 via a plurality of radially extending steering wheel webs 12. An optical fiber 14, which covers the entire circumference of the steering wheel rim 11, is wound in a coil shape around the steering wheel rim 11. The two ends of the optical fiber 14 run parallel along the steering wheel webs 12 to the steering wheel hub 13. At the first end of the optical fiber 14 there is an unrecognizable transmitter 16, the emitted light signal of which is also received by a sensor 18, also not shown. The transmitter 16 and the pickup 18 are in one
Integrated evaluation circuit 15, which processes the received light signals into a driver signal 20.
Deviating from the arrangement described, it would also be possible that only defined sections on the circumference of the Steering wheel rim 11 are wrapped by the optical fiber 14, or that the steering wheel webs 12 are wrapped in addition or as an alternative to the steering wheel rim 11. An arrangement of the evaluation circuit 15 that is decoupled from the steering wheel 10 would also be conceivable.
Not shown is a sheathing of the steering wheel 10, which encloses the optical fiber 14 and the evaluation circuit 15 so that these components are not visible from the outside.
Krafteinwirkungen verformen die Ummantelung des Lenkrads 10 und damit einhergehend die Lichtleitfaser 14 in infinitisimal geringem Bereich.FIG. 2 shows, as one of the essential components of the evaluation circuit 15, a transmitter 16 arranged at the first end of the optical fiber 14. An excitation signal transmitter 17 sends a control signal 17.1 to an excitation signal generator 17 which sends a signal correlator 19 in parallel. The light signal 16.1 then generated by the transmitter 16 is polarized by a polarizer (not shown) before it enters the optical fiber 14 and passes along the optical fiber 14 to a photosensitive pickup 18 arranged at its opposite second end. This pickup 18 converts the received light signal 16.2 into a response signal 18.1 um, and forwards this to the signal correlator 19. In the signal correlator 19, the control signal 17.1 for the transmitter 16 and the response signal 18.1 of the sensor 18 are compared with one another. From the differences in the polarization between the two signals, the signal correlator 19 generates a correlation signal 19.1, which is converted by an evaluation logic unit 20 connected downstream of the signal correlator 19 into driver signals 20.x for controlling vehicle devices not shown. The polarization differences between the control signal 17.1 of the transmitter 16 and the response signal 18.1 of the sensor 18 are due to physical Laws that are described in detail in the document DE-OS 33 11 524 are due to the effects of force or pressure on the optical fiber 14. These pressure or force effects generated by the driver deform the casing of the steering wheel 10 and, along with it, the optical fiber 14 in an infinitisimally small area.
Of course, changes or advantageous developments of the exemplary embodiment are possible without departing from the concept of the invention.
In this context, a further development possibility should be mentioned that would make it possible to control several different vehicle functions by means of a single sensor on the steering wheel rim 11. For this purpose, the evaluation circuit 15 would have to recognize grip sequences from short successive pressure pulses, to which various vehicle-side devices are assigned.
