Der PI-Code ist nicht zur unmittelbaren Anzeige des empfangenen Programms auf einem Display gedacht, sondern soll vielmehr dem RDS-Empfänger die automatische Abstimmung auf einen anderen Sender derselben Programmkette ermöglichen, sobald die Empfangsqualität des eingestellten Senders sich verschlechtert. Wenn ein anderer Sender mit dem gleichen PI-Code besser empfangen wird, erfolgt ein Frequenzwechsel. Damit die Zeit zum Auffinden einer interaktiven Frequenz nicht zu lange dauert, wird der PI-Code in jeder Gruppe als erster Block übertragen. Neben dem PI-Code stellt RDS noch weitere Informationen zur Verfügung. So wird zur Ausgabe auf dem Display der Programmname (PS-Code) übertragen, der aus acht alphanumerischen Zeichen bestehen kann. Zusätzlich kann neben Verkehrsinformationen auch ein Radiotext (RT) zur programmbegleitenden Information übertragen werden (z.B. Titel von Musikstücken). In entsprechend ausgestatteten RDS-Heimempfängern können 64 alphanumerische Zeichen als Klartext dargestellt werden. Ergibt die Abfrage der Wechsel sperre, daß diese durch die Eingabeeinheit aktiviert wurde, so wird das digitale Signal 3 vor einer möglichen Ausgabe auf dem Anzeigeelement 5 zunächst einer weiteren Auswertung unterzogen. Mittels eines Steuerbefehls 7 findet eine Abfrage 8 statt, ob sich der PI-Code im Vergleich zum letzten digitalen Signal 3 geändert hat (Pi (n-1) = Pi (n) ?). Da der PI-Code immer als erster Block einer jeden Gruppe übertragen wird, kann diese Abfrage bei jedem neuen RDS-Signal 1 erfolgen. Die Abfrage 8 kann softwaremäßig durch entsprechende Programmierung des Mikroprozessors 4 oder durch eine externe Hardware realisiert werden. Ergibt die Abfrage 8, daß sich der PI-Code nicht geändert hat, so wird durch einen Befehl 9 die Anzeige am Anzeigeelement 5 aufrechterhalten, d. h. der zuvor einmal registrierte Programmname aus dem PS-Code eines RDS-Signals 1 ist auf dem Anzeigeelement 5 dargestellt. Ergibt die Abfrage 8, daß sich der PI-Code geändert hat, so wird auf dem Anzeigeelement 5 der entsprechende neue PS-Code mittels eines Befehls 10 dargestellt. Dabei überprüft der Mikroprozessor 4 zuvor, ob ein zum neuen PI-Code zugehöriger PS-Code in einem Speicherelement des Rundfunkempfängers abgelegt ist. Ist dies der Fall, so wird der PS-Code im Speicherelement zur Anzeige gebracht. Dadurch wird vermieden, daß eine zufällig übertragene Werbeinformation beim Wechsel des PI-Codes als neuer Programmname zur Anzeige gebracht wird und dort solange stehen bleibt, bis eine erneute Änderung des PI-Codes auftritt. Ist die Wechselsperre aktiv, so findet die zuvor beschriebene Prozedur vorzugsweise für alle eingespeicherten bzw. während des Betriebszustandes neu eingespeicherten Programme Anwendung, unabhängig davon ob diese mit oder ohne Wechselsperre abgespeichert wurden.The user data received by a receiver is decomposed into an audio signal and an RDS signal 1.
