Abstract

An aluminum driveshaft assembly (10) is dynamically balanced by locating steel plates (14) at desired locations on an exterior surface of an aluminum driveshaft (12), inserting tapered aluminum studs (16) through tapered holes (15) of the aluminum or steel plates (14), and inertia or friction welding (17) the bases of the aluminum studs (16) to the exterior surface of the driveshaft (12) to retain the steel plates (14). Alternatively steel plates (114) with round cylindrical holes (115) are attached to the driveshaft (12) by round cylindrical studs (116). The cylindrical studs (116) are friction welded to the driveshaft (12) after the aluminum or steel plates (14) are located on the driveshaft (12) and steel plates with cylindrical holes (114) are then inserted onto the studs (116). Cylindrical studs (116) may also be friction welded before the aluminum or steel plates (114) are added. In this case aluminum or steel plates (114) are then added and the stud (116) is rolled over in a secondary operation.
