The invention relates to a self-locking insurance device for a rope, comprising:
a first base flange equipped with a first pulley or fixed stud, which is offset with respect to a hinge axis extending perpendicular to the first flange,
a second pulley secured to a support plate mounted with limited pivoting around the axis in a plane parallel to the base flange,
- a control handle associated with the support plate to ensure manual release of the rope,
- a second retractable flange arranged to authorize the winding and the passage of the rope between the first and second pulleys,
a first braking surface arranged on the first pulley, against which the rope is pressed by a boss of the second pulley when the support plate is driven by the tension of the rope towards a first locking position,
- And a return spring urging the support plate in the unlocking direction towards a rest position.

Such a device is known from document FR 2451 752 corresponding to the STOP descender marketed by the applicant. The reaction of the rope urges the second pulley towards a single locking position, in which the boss wedges the rope against the first braking surface. A stop for limiting the pivoting stroke is arranged on the support plate to stop the second pulley in this position. The effect of jamming by the boss can nevertheless damage the rope during heavy shocks following repeated falls.

The object of the invention is to provide an insurance device which can be used as a descender or a blocker, preventing any premature wear of the rope.

The insurance device according to the invention is characterized in that the second pulley is shaped as a cam having a second braking surface intended to cooperate with the first braking surface, following the continued pivoting movement of the support plate towards a second locking position, the passage from the first locking position to the second locking position taking place when the tension of the rope exceeds a predetermined threshold.

The second braking surface then takes over from the boss so that the effect of the rope jamming against the first braking surface is greater in the second locking position than in the first.

The threshold for passing from the first locking position to the second locking position depends on the hardness of the return spring of the support plate.

The first and second braking surfaces extend substantially parallel to each other in the second rope locking position. The jamming of the rope over a long span prevents it from being worn during heavy shocks.

The passage threshold between the two blocking positions can advantageously be adjusted by means of a device for adjusting the preload of the return spring of the support plate.

  • - la figure 1 montre une vue en élévation du dispositif d'assurance selon l'invention, le deuxième flasque étant en position écartée, et la poignée de commande en position de repos (traits pleins), et en position de travail (traits pointillés) ;

Other advantages and characteristics will emerge more clearly from the description which follows of an embodiment of the invention, given by way of nonlimiting example, and represented in the appended drawings, in which:
  • - Figure 1 shows an elevational view of the insurance device according to the invention, the second flange being in the separated position, and the control handle in the rest position (solid lines), and in the working position (dotted lines) ;

La première surface 28 de freinage est sensiblement rectiligne, en s'étendant perpendiculairement au flasque de base 18.In the figures, a safety device 10 for rope, comprises a pair of pulleys 12,14, housed in a transverse gap 16 formed between two parallel flanges 18,20. The first pulley 12 is mounted fixed by means of a fixing member 22 on the first base flange 18, while being immobilized in rotation. The first pulley 12 is equipped with a circular upper sector having a groove 24 for guiding the rope 26, and with a first braking surface 28, located opposite the second pulley 14. The first braking surface 28 is substantially straight, extending perpendicular to the base flange 18.

The support plate 30 is separated from the base flange 18 by a small axial clearance, allowing movement limited pivoting of the plate 30, in a deflection plane parallel to the flange 18.

The second pulley 14 is shaped as a cam, which is eccentric relative to the pivot axis 32. The pulley 14 has a circular lower sector having a groove 34 for winding the cord 26, said groove 34 being centered on an axis fictitious, slightly offset from the pivot axis 32. Opposite the groove 34, there is a boss 36 intended to wedge the rope 26 against the first braking surface 28, when the support plate 30 is in an intermediate position corresponding to a first locking position (fig.6 ).

La deuxième surface 38 est sensiblement rectiligne, et se trouve plus éloignée de l'axe 32 que la troisième surface 40.Between the boss 36 and the circular groove 34 of the second pulley 14, extend a second braking surface 38, and a third surface 40 for guiding the rope 26. The second surface 38 is substantially rectilinear, and is more distant of the axis 32 as the third surface 40.

The positioning of the axis 32 of the second pulley 14 is such that the boss 36 never comes into engagement against the first braking surface 28 of the pulley 12. In the intermediate position of FIG. 6, the passage space of the cord 26 between the first surface 28 and the boss 36 is minimum, so as to ensure a first blocking when the value of the tension exerted on the cord 26 is less than a predetermined threshold.

The support plate 30 and pulley 14 assembly is capable of continuing the pivoting movement beyond the intermediate position towards a final position (FIG. 7), when the tension of the rope 26 exceeds the adjustment threshold of the device. 10. The first and second braking surfaces 28, 38 then extend parallel to one another to constitute the second locking position, which intervenes during a fall of the user.

The adjustment threshold between the two blocking positions of the second pulley 14 depends on the return force of a torsion spring 42, shown in dotted lines in FIG. 5. The spring 42 is mounted coaxially on the axis 32, in being integrated under the pulley 14 in a circular housing formed in the support plate 30. One of the end strands of the spring 42 is hooked to the second pulley 14, and the other strand to the base flange 18. In the absence of tension on the rope 26, the prestressing of the spring 42 causes the return of the support plate 30 and pulley 14 assembly to a rest position shown in FIG. 1. This position is suitable for the establishment of the rope 26, which is wound according to an S in the two grooves 24,34 of the pulleys 12,14 with an intermediate passage between the two surfaces 28,40.

La partie supérieure du flasque 20 est montée à basculement limité sur un pivot de l'organe de fixation 22 de la première poulie 12.The second flange 20 (FIG. 1) is used to close the transverse gap 16 after the cord 26 has been put in place. The upper part of the flange 20 is mounted with limited tilting on a pivot of the fixing member 22 of the first pulley. 12.

La butée 46 est disposée dans le prolongement de l'axe 32 de la deuxième poulie 14.The position of maximum separation of the second flange 20 (FIG. 1) allows the cord 26 to be wound around the two pulleys 14,12. In the closed position, shown in Figure 2, the two flanges 18,20 are located opposite one another, preventing any escape of the cord 26 outside the interval 16. The middle area of the second flange 20 comprises a slot 44 in the form of a semi-open U, intended to cooperate in the closed position with a stop 46 for limiting the tilting stroke of the flange 20. The stop 46 is arranged in the extension of the axis 32 of the second pulley 14.

The lower part of the base flange 18 has a first opening 48 to which a fastening carabiner (not shown) can be hung. The second flange 20 has a second opening 50 conjugate intended to come into alignment in the closed position with the first opening 48, to allow the introduction of the carabiner by means of a hinged pawl 52.

A l'opposé de l'ouverture 48, le flasque de base 18 comprend un orifice 54 pour le passage d'une cordelette auxiliaire (non représentée).Opposite the opening 48, the base flange 18 includes an orifice 54 for the passage of an auxiliary cord (not shown).

In the central zone of the base flange 18, the straight edge is fitted with a square rib 56, arranged to prevent the cord 26 from being wound upside down on the pulleys 14, 12.

A control handle 58 is associated with the support plate 30 for pivoting by manual action the second pulley 14 around the axis 32, from one of the two locking positions (fig. 6 or 7) towards the release position (fig. 5). The control handle 58 is advantageously articulated on the plate 30 at a point 60 located opposite the rib 56, and cooperates with a return spring 62 which biases the handle 58 towards a raised position of rest (in solid lines on fig. 1). The working position of the handle 58 is illustrated in dotted lines in FIGS. 1 and 5, and is obtained by lowering the handle 58 anticlockwise, and against the restoring force. of the spring 62. The release of the handle 58 causes it to return automatically to the raised position of rest.

La poignée de commande 58 pourrait être fixée sans articulation à la plaque support 30.The control handle 58 could be fixed without articulation to the support plate 30.

The operation of the safety device 10 is described below for use in descenders:

The user first installs the rope 26 on the pulleys 14,12, after prior tilting to the left of the second flange 20 to the separated position (Figure 1). The rope 26 is first wound in the groove 34 of the second pulley 14, then passes into the intermediate space arranged between the first and the third surfaces 28, 40, and is finally wound in the groove 24 for guiding the first pulley 12 fixed. The rib 56 prevents a bad winding of the cord 26. The reclosing of the second flange 20 traps the cord 26 in the transverse interval 16 of the device 10. The positioning of the snap hook in the two openings 48.50 keeps the two flanges 18.20 facing each other, preventing any accidental escape of the rope 26.

The attachment carabiner is connected to the user's harness by a connecting strap and the upstream strand of the rope 26 is fixed to an upper anchor point.

During the descent along the rope 26, the user positions the control handle 58 in the working position, and rotates it to the lowered position corresponding to the unlocking position of the second pulley 14 (see figure 5). The space between the first and third surfaces 28.40 is sufficient not to block the rope 26. The descent speed depends on the friction of the rope 26 in the grooves 34.24 and can be adjusted by the handle 58.

In the event of voluntary release of the handle 58 during a normal descent, that is to say without falling, the tension F1 of the rope 26 (see FIG. 6) causes the pivoting in a clockwise direction of the support plate 30 and pulley 14 assembly to the intermediate position, in which the boss 36 wedges the rope 26 against the first braking surface 28. The device 10 is then in the first locking position causing the descent movement to stop. The tension F1 of the cord 26 is lower than the adjustment threshold of the device 10. The second pulley 14 remains immobilized in this intermediate position, as long as the control handle 58 is not actuated.

In the event of accidental release of the handle 58 following a fall, the tension F2 of the rope 26 pivots the second pulley 14 towards the final position, in which the jamming of the rope 26 occurs between the first and second surfaces 28, 38 braking (Figure 7). The apparatus 10 is in the second locking position, since the tension F2 of the cord 26 is greater than said adjustment threshold. Note that the blocking intensity of the rope 26 in the apparatus 10 depends on the value of the tension exerted on the support plate 30 and pulley 14 assembly. When the adjustment threshold of the apparatus 10 is not exceeded (case of voltage F1), the small range of the boss 36 is sufficient to define the first locking position. If the threshold is exceeded by the tension F2 of the cord 26, the second braking surface 38 takes over from the boss 36, to define a greater range during the second locking position. The jamming effect is greater in this second locking position, but the cord 26 is not damaged due to the planar shape of the two surfaces 28, 38.

The safety device 10 is particularly suitable for climbing, both in descenders and in ascenders for insurance by the second or solo.

It can be seen in FIG. 1 that the direction of tilting of the second flange 20 towards the separated position takes place to the left. This results in a strengthening of the mechanical strength of the device 10 in the event of impacts. The positioning of the slot 44 engaged on the stop 46 of the axis 32 (fig.2) prevents any unwanted opening of the flanges 18,20 following an impact.

It is possible to adjust the passage threshold from the first locking position to the second locking position, depending on the weight of the user. The adjustment is made by adjusting the preload of the torsion spring 42 in the rest position. One of the strands of the spring 42 can be connected to an adjustment device, in particular with a rotary button accessible from the opposite face of the base flange 18. When the adjustment is made, the rotary button is locked. This setting allows you to precisely adjust the threshold in a range between 100 and 500 daN.

Le seuil peut encore être ajusté en faisant varier la position relative de la deuxième poulie 14 par rapport à la première poulie 12.The threshold can also be adjusted by varying the relative position of the second pulley 14 relative to the first pulley 12.

According to a variant (not shown), the first pulley 12 is replaced by a simple fixed stud. The rope 26 is no longer wound according to an S, but takes the form of a U-shaped half-loop.
