In both cases, the same solidified thickness of 100 mm was produced.
- the billets were poured into an installation of known type, comprising an ingot mold 1 and an intense cooling device 2. These two devices are symbolized in FIG. 2 by rectangles 1 and 2 differently hatched. It can be seen that after leaving the ingot mold 1, the surface temperature of the billets decreases very quickly in the device 2, to rise instantly as soon as it exits therefrom and then quickly reaches a maximum from which it decreases slowly.
- a moderate cooling device 3 in accordance with the invention, has been added following the intense cooling device 2.
- Diagram (b) clearly shows that the rise in the surface temperature of the billets is greatly slowed down in the cooling device 3 compared to what it was in the first case at the outlet of the device 2. Thereafter, the temperature also rises more slowly to its maximum value , which is the equalization temperature, before slowly decreasing. This slower rise in the temperature of the billets allows a more progressive solidification of the metal and makes it possible to avoid the formation of microcracks at the solidification front. The evolution of the solidified thickness is also more favorable in this case.
