Definitions
- the invention relates to an electro-optical flat display device, in particular an LCD display panel according to the preamble of claim 1.
- An electro-optical flat display device of the generic type designed as an LCD display panel is previously known from EP 0.146.285.
- several display elements are arranged side by side in five horizontal rows, each of which is formed from a 5x3 matrix.
- the five rows of LCD display elements form the front of the housing.
- Two fluorescent lamps, which extend in the longitudinal direction of the rows of LCD display elements, are installed in the housing as the lighting device.
- the disadvantage here is a high heat development of the fluorescent lamps within the flat housing, so that fans must be attached to the housing regularly for heat dissipation.
- Another disadvantage is that the fluorescent lamps have to be replaced after a certain burning time.
- the individual rows of LCD display elements are arranged foldably on the front of the housing, so that the fluorescent lamps provided on the back of the housing with a reflector can be replaced from the front of the housing.
- Another disadvantage is that the LCD display elements are constantly exposed to UV and heat radiation. This leads to the decomposition and destruction of the dyes within the LCD display elements, so that they have to be replaced after a long period of use.
- a further disadvantage is that the fluorescent lamps must be associated with electrical installation devices inside the housing or on the rear thereof, which also generate heat and are heavy in weight.
- the necessity of the foldable arrangement of the LCD display elements through a large number of housing openings allows dust to penetrate into the interior of the housing, which is deposited on the fluorescent lamps on the one hand and on the inside of the LCD display elements on the other and for premature light attenuation leads.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of improving an electro-optical flat display device, in particular an LCD display panel, of the generic type in such a way that the lighting device is considerably simplified in order to achieve a more compact flat display device, the display elements of which are not UV or Heat radiation can still be exposed to dust, and which is particularly easy to maintain.
- the backlighting of the display elements takes place by means of a light guide tube which is assigned to the row of display elements and is arranged in the interior of the housing and whose light source is at one end of the light guide tube. in particular outside the housing.
- the light pipe is made of translucent material and is surrounded by a reflector, so that the entire light radiation emanating from the light source is constantly reflected within the light guide tube and can only emerge directly through the cutouts of the reflector in the area of the individual display elements. On the one hand, this enables full utilization of the light radiation from the light source.
- the housing can thus be encapsulated in a dust-tight manner. Furthermore, there is no electrical installation inside the housing. A ventilation device of the housing is also no longer required.
- the light source is arranged at the end of the light guide tube located outside the housing, and color and heat filters are placed in front of the light source.
- the electronic components for controlling the LCD display elements can be arranged in the housing spaces formed between them.
- Optical tubes are known per se, for example from DE 34 30 191. However, these serve exclusively as luminous elements for room lighting, whereas the use of such light guide tubes in electro-optical flat display devices, in particular LCD display panels, is claimed according to the invention.
- the LCD display panel consists of a flat housing 1 with rear wall 2, top wall 3, bottom wall 4, side walls 5 and with partition walls 6 which extend between the side walls 5 parallel to top wall 3 and bottom wall 4 and form the individual chambers 7.
- the front 8 of the housing is essentially formed by rows 9 of LCD display elements 10, which in the exemplary embodiment are designed as known 7-segment display elements. Instead of the 7-segment display elements, 3x5 matrix elements or the like can also be used. The structure of such LCD display elements is described in more detail in EP 0.146.285.
- the LCD display elements 10 are accommodated by profiles 11 which extend longitudinally on the front side 8 and which are fastened to the top wall 3 and the bottom wall 4 and to the intermediate walls 6.
- the electronic components 23 assigned to the individual LCD display elements 10 are mounted on the intermediate walls 6. On the inside, the LCD display elements 10 are assigned to diffusers 24.
- the entire housing 1 is encapsulated in a dust-tight manner.
- Light guide tubes 12 are arranged within the individual chambers 7 of the housing 1, which are U-shaped in the exemplary embodiment, the open side of the U-shape being formed by a strip-shaped wall 13.
- the light guide tubes 12 and the U-shaped closing walls 13 are surrounded by reflection material 14, which has cutouts 15 only in the area of the LCD display elements 10, which serve as light exit openings and whose surface dimensions correspond exactly to those of the LCD display elements 10 to be illuminated and are assigned to them is.
- concentrators 16 are still mounted in the rear curvature area of the U-shape, which direct the light that is totally totally reflected in the light guide tubes 10 onto the opposite cutouts 15 of the reflector material 14.
- Each light guide tube 12 is connected to a light guide tube 17 lying outside the housing 1, which has at one end a light source 18 which introduces all of its light radiation into the light guide tube 17 by means of a suitable reflector 25.
- Deflecting mirrors 19, 20 are arranged at the bends of the light guide tube 17 and at the entry points of the light guide tubes 12, the deflecting mirrors 19 deflecting all of the light radiation supplied and the deflecting mirrors 20 deflecting only partial radiation into the respective light guide tubes 17 and 12, respectively.
- the light source 18 is preceded by a heat filter 21 in the form of a glass pane and a color filter 22 which is in the form of an electrically controllable, birefringent color filter in liquid crystal technology (ECB-LC filter).
- the light radiation emanating from the light source 18 is totally introduced into the individual light guide tubes 12 via the light guide tube 17 and the deflecting mirror 19, 20.
- the light guide tube 17 and the deflecting mirror 19, 20 There is a constant total reflection of the introduced light radiation on the walls of the light guide tubes 12, including the flat walls 13 assigned to them.
- Additional mirrors for largely lossless reflection of the light radiation are arranged at the end opposite the light source 18 in a manner not shown in detail.
- the light radiation which is thus totally totally reflected within the light guide tubes 12 can only emerge through the light exit openings 15 which are assigned to the respective LCD display elements 10.
- the intensity of the light radiation emerging here is further increased by means of the concentrators 16.
- a material known per se is used as the material for the light guide tube 12 and the wall 13 closing it.
- a reflection film is used, which is described in DE 34 30 191 A1 using the example of a luminous element with a prismatic light guide for room lighting.
- a special design of the outer contour of the light-guiding film serves for total reflection of the light radiation within a light-guiding tube 12, with the radiation only being able to exit within the cutouts 15.

Description
The invention relates to an electro-optical flat display device, in particular an LCD display panel according to the preamble of claim 1.
An electro-optical flat display device of the generic type designed as an LCD display panel is previously known from EP 0.146.285. In this case, several display elements are arranged side by side in five horizontal rows, each of which is formed from a 5x3 matrix. The five rows of LCD display elements form the front of the housing. Two fluorescent lamps, which extend in the longitudinal direction of the rows of LCD display elements, are installed in the housing as the lighting device.
The disadvantage here is a high heat development of the fluorescent lamps within the flat housing, so that fans must be attached to the housing regularly for heat dissipation. Another disadvantage is that the fluorescent lamps have to be replaced after a certain burning time. For this purpose, the individual rows of LCD display elements are arranged foldably on the front of the housing, so that the fluorescent lamps provided on the back of the housing with a reflector can be replaced from the front of the housing.
Another disadvantage is that the LCD display elements are constantly exposed to UV and heat radiation. This leads to the decomposition and destruction of the dyes within the LCD display elements, so that they have to be replaced after a long period of use. A further disadvantage is that the fluorescent lamps must be associated with electrical installation devices inside the housing or on the rear thereof, which also generate heat and are heavy in weight. Finally, there is a further disadvantage that the necessity of the foldable arrangement of the LCD display elements through a large number of housing openings allows dust to penetrate into the interior of the housing, which is deposited on the fluorescent lamps on the one hand and on the inside of the LCD display elements on the other and for premature light attenuation leads.
The invention is therefore based on the object of improving an electro-optical flat display device, in particular an LCD display panel, of the generic type in such a way that the lighting device is considerably simplified in order to achieve a more compact flat display device, the display elements of which are not UV or Heat radiation can still be exposed to dust, and which is particularly easy to maintain.
This object is achieved from the characterizing features of claim 1. According to the invention, the backlighting of the display elements, in particular LCD display elements, takes place by means of a light guide tube which is assigned to the row of display elements and is arranged in the interior of the housing and whose light source is at one end of the light guide tube. in particular outside the housing. The light pipe is made of translucent material and is surrounded by a reflector, so that the entire light radiation emanating from the light source is constantly reflected within the light guide tube and can only emerge directly through the cutouts of the reflector in the area of the individual display elements. On the one hand, this enables full utilization of the light radiation from the light source. On the other hand, there is no UV and heat radiation exposure of the display elements, in particular LCD display elements, and it is no longer necessary to replace components of the lighting device arranged inside the housing in the region of the display elements, so that the individual display elements are firmly mounted on the front of the housing can. The housing can thus be encapsulated in a dust-tight manner. Furthermore, there is no electrical installation inside the housing. A ventilation device of the housing is also no longer required.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the light source is arranged at the end of the light guide tube located outside the housing, and color and heat filters are placed in front of the light source. This arrangement on the one hand increases the ease of maintenance of the flat display device and on the other hand reduces the thermal load on the display elements in the housing.
Finally, if several rows of display elements are arranged one above the other, each of which is assigned a light guide tube, the electronic components for controlling the LCD display elements can be arranged in the housing spaces formed between them.
Optical tubes are known per se, for example from DE 34 30 191. However, these serve exclusively as luminous elements for room lighting, whereas the use of such light guide tubes in electro-optical flat display devices, in particular LCD display panels, is claimed according to the invention.

- Fig. 2 is a perspective sectional view of the LCD display panel.
The LCD display panel consists of a flat housing 1 with
The
Each
Additional mirrors for largely lossless reflection of the light radiation are arranged at the end opposite the
A material known per se is used as the material for the
