- the extension of the middle pole 5 from its location on the main branch of the cylinder head is such that this pole remains recessed with respect to the extreme poles 6 and 7 so as not to encroach on the air gap.
- the coils 8, 9, 10 are connected in accordance with the diagram in FIG. 2 so that the intensity of the current flowing in the coil 8 of the middle pole is equal to the sum of the intensities flowing in the coils 9 and 10 of the opposite poles, which intensities are in principle equal. Under these conditions, if the coils have the same number of turns, and if the direction of each winding is appropriate, the incoming flow from the middle pole 5 is equal to the sum of the outgoing flows from poles 6 and 7, and the lines of induction pass through the edge of the slab as shown by the arrows 11, producing the desired local heating.
