Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for detecting the displacement of a writing instrument from a determined proximity threshold with respect to a writing surface, this instrument having, in the vicinity of its tracing point, a permanent magnet of which the magnetization is oriented generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of said instrument and symmetrically about this axis, this device comprising, underlying the writing surface, at least two electrical conductors in series extending parallel to the writing plane.
- FR-2,486,271 has already proposed a device for measuring the characteristic parameters of the speed of handwriting using coils arranged under the writing surface in which electrical voltages are induced by the magnetic field a permanent magnet attached to the writing instrument. Given this concept, it is obvious that voltages are not induced at the terminals of the coils only when writing, but also following movements of this writing instrument at a certain distance from this writing surface.
- the object of the present invention is to remedy, at least in part, the above-mentioned drawbacks.
- the subject of this invention is a device for detecting moving a writing instrument according to claim 1.
- the advantage of this device compared to the solutions proposed above lies essentially in the fact that only the magnetic field coming from the permanent magnet secured to the writing instrument can induce a signal characteristic of the fixed proximity threshold. Consequently, false initiations of the signature comparison process for example, caused by all kinds of parasitic vibrations communicated to the writing surface, are avoided. Therefore, no other particular precaution is necessary to determine the start of the recording in order to compare a signature with a reference signature.
- This feature is of great importance for a system intended for use by the general public, as would be the case if one wanted to use this mode of comparison of signatures in the field of credit cards in order to authenticate the holder of a given card. as being the legal owner of this card.
- the attached drawing illustrates, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the present invention.
- Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of this embodiment.
- Fig. 2 is a diagram of the electronic circuit.
- Figs 3a to 3c are diagrams of the signal processing by the circuit of fig. 2.
- Fig. 1 illustrates four electrical conductors 1,2 and 1 ', 2' each forming a series of rectangular loops 3, respectively 4, 3 'respectively 4', adjacent by their long sides, open on a short side, the openings of the loops adjacent being located at respective opposite ends of these loops.
- the conductors 1 and 2 form a second series of loops 5, respectively 6 rectangular, adjacent by their long sides, open on a short side, the openings of the adjacent loops being located at the respective opposite ends of these loops.
- These loops 5, respectively 6, cover the loops 3, respectively 4, but with their open sides adjacent to the respective closed sides of the loops 3, respectively 4.
- the conductors 1 ', 2' also form loops 5 ', respectively 6 'which are arranged identically with respect to loops 3' and 4 'as are loops 5 and 6 with respect to loops 3 and 4.
- the width of loops 3 to 6 and 3 'to 6' is 1 cm
- the magnet fixed on the axis of the writing instrument consists of a samarium-cobalt cylinder 7 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length, the end of which is closest to the tip of the writing instrument. handwriting is 5 mm back from this point.
- the diameter of the magnetic flux cutting the writing surface is of the order of 1 cm.
- the two conductors 1 and 1 'and the two conductors 2 and 2' connected in series are superimposed by shifting them by half a step, so that the movement of the writing instrument beget a fem maximum as soon as it is moved with a component of movement transverse to the loops of conductors 1 and 1 'or 2 and 2' of at least 5 mm in length and at most 5 mm. of this surface.
- the main axes of the rectangular loops 3, 3 'and 5, 5' intersect at right angles the main axes of the loops 4, 4 'and 6, 6'.
- the four superimposed conductors detect the components of movement along two rectangular axes.
- the electronic diagram for processing the signals from coils 3 to 6 and 3 'to 6' includes a signal amplifier 7, a rectifier 8, a threshold detector 9 which triggers a control pulse 10 as soon as the detected signal exceeds the threshold fixed.
- FIG. 3a illustrates the signal after amplification by the amplifier 7
- FIG. 3b shows this same signal rectified by the rectifier 8
- FIG. 3c shows the setting of the threshold and the generation of control pulses each time the detected, amplified and rectified signal exceeds the set threshold.
- the proposed solution is extremely simple, the conductors 1,2 and 1 ', 2' can be produced by the technique of the printed circuit. This solution is reliable insofar as the control pulse can only be generated by the writing instrument associated with a permanent magnet moving at a determined distance from the writing surface.
- This solution is also perfectly compatible with the detection of the speed of the writing instrument by induction of voltages proportional to this speed at the terminals of the induction coils, as described in the documents cited above.

Abstract
This device comprises electrical conductors (1, 1'; 2, 2') placed under the writing surface and associated with a writing instrument provided with a permanent magnet whose magnetization is oriented parallel to its longitudinal axis. These conductors form elongated meandering windings spanning the writing surface so that when the instrument is moved parallel to this surface and transverse to the meanders of the windings, a sinusoidal voltage is induced across the windings provided the instrument is close enough to the writing surface. The pitch of the meanders of the windings is chosen to induce a sinusoidal voltage with an amplitude greater than a given threshold for a given spacing between the writing instrument and the writing surface.
