Description

The invention relates generally to continuous casting between cylinders, and more particularly to the extraction of the solidified metallurgical product, at the start of casting.

The techniques of continuous casting between rolls are well known, for example from document US-A-3038219. The liquid metal is poured into a funnel formed by two rotary cylinders rotating in opposite directions and side closing walls. On contact with the cylinders, the metal solidifies and leaves the space between the cylinders in the form of a continuous bar which is taken up, once the process is installed, by conventional extraction rollers.

In vertical continuous casting installations in an ingot mold, a dummy or "dummy bar" is commonly used, of section adapted to the ingot mold and provided with an anchoring head, which is placed at the outlet of the ingot mold: the cast and cooled metal solidifies on contact with the anchoring head, thus solidifying with the false bar which can then be gradually extracted, by driving the bar in formation (see for example FR-A-2334446).

This technique is relatively easy to implement in the case of continuous casting in an ingot mold because the latter offers, in contact with the cast metal, fixed cooling walls which define a passage of constant or substantially constant section.

On the other hand, in the case of continuous casting between cylinders, the outlet section, defined by the narrowest passage between the cylinders, is surrounded upstream and downstream respectively by a rather abrupt narrowing and widening of the passage , and on the other hand, the members defining this outlet section are, at least in part, mobile. Under these conditions, the known solution for continuous casting ingot molds cannot simply be transposed: if, as shown in the doc. SU-A-627909 or JP 5758957, the head of the extraction manikin is placed at or upstream of the outlet section, the solidified metal on too large a volume may no longer be able to pass between the cylinders at the level of the outlet section. On the other hand, if the extraction dummy is placed at or downstream of the outlet section, problems are encountered in sealing the still liquid metal between the dummy and the cylinders.

The object of the invention is to propose a dummy suitable for continuous casting between cylinders, which does not have these drawbacks.

To this end, the subject of the invention is a process for starting the extraction of a continuous casting product between rotary cylinders, energetically cooled by internal circulation of a cooling fluid, defining, with side closing walls, a pouring funnel, process according to which a dummy is used comprising an anchoring head provided with two flexible lateral wings which extend it parallel to the axes of the cylinders, progressively deviating from each other from their end fixed to said head, the wings defining, in combination with the side closure walls, a provisional funnel, filling said provisional funnel with liquid metal and continuing to feed it at the same time as the cylinders are rotated about their axis and that the dummy is pulled down, a process characterized in that the head is placed, which carries an anchoring piece intended to hang the solidified metal , below the plane containing the axes of the cylinders in such a way, however, that the free ends of the flexible wings come to bear on the casting cylinders above said plane, said provisional funnel being narrower than the casting funnel.

Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the following description, given with reference to the appended drawings in which FIGS. 1 and 2 are views respectively from the side and from above of a device for continuous casting between cylinders.

It shows cylinders 1 and 2 defining with side walls 3 and 4 a pouring funnel.

As is known per se, the cylinders 1 and 2 are vigorously cooled by internal circulation of cooling water, or other fluids, and can be rotated about their horizontal axis 5, 6, in the direction of the arrows 7 and 8, by conventional motor means not shown.

Although fixed side walls 3 and 4 have been shown, it should be understood that it could just as easily have movable side walls, formed for example by flanges linked to one or the other of the casting rolls, as is already known.

According to the invention, a dummy is provided, the head 9 of which carries a hooking piece 10, formed for example by a T-profile, intended to "hang" the solidified metal in order to facilitate its extraction.

The anchoring head 9 is provided with two longitudinal wings 11 and 12 formed by a thin, flexible sheet, and curved cylindrically (according to a cylinder with a straight section not necessarily circular) and extending said head parallel to the axes of the cylinders, therefore also at their surface. The concavity of the wings is turned outwards. The base of the wings 11, 12 is fixed by welding to the edges of the head 9, parallel to the axes 5 and 6 of the cylinders, and therefore gradually move away from one another from their base.

Les ailes 11, 12 s'appuient élastiquement sur la surface des cylindres 1, 2, à un niveau situé au-dessus du plan 13.The manikin is placed in the initial extraction position, so that the head 9 is located below the plane 13 containing the axes 5 and 6 of the cylinders 1, 2. The wings 11, 12 rest elastically on the surface of the cylinders 1, 2, at a level above plane 13.

The wings 11, 12, in combination with the walls 3, 4, form a temporary funnel, closed at the bottom by the front face of the head 9.

To start casting, there are at the bottom of the temporary funnel, shot 14 intended, in connection with the attachment piece 10, to ensure faster solidification of metal and better attachment between the mannequin and the solidified metal . Then we fill this temporary funnel with liquid metal and continue to feed it as well as we put the cylinders 1, 2 in rotation around their axis 5, 6 in the direction indicated by the arrows and we pull the dummy down. The dummy is pulled with a speed preferably substantially equal to the peripheral speed of the cylinders so that the upper end of the wings 11, 12 follows, with a minimum of sliding, the part of the surface of the cylinders with which it is in contact .

Because the wings 11, 12 bear elastically against the cylinders 1, 2, they provide the minimum seal necessary with respect to the liquid metal.

During the gradual extraction of the dummy in the direction of arrow 15, the flexibility of the wings 11 and 12 allows them to approach and be able to cross the narrowest interval between the cylinders, at the plane 13.

Because the manikin is disposed below the plane 13, its width is not limited to the narrowest interval separating the cylinders: it can therefore be slightly greater, if desired.
