Abstract
Description
- This invention relates to rotors for centrifugal compressors and fans comprising a central hub having an annular flange, a backing disc made of sheet metal and having a central bore for receiving said hub, said backing disc being connected to said annular flange of the hub, and a circular row of spaced blades, each blade being made of sheet metal and the edge facing the backing disc, of each blade, being connected to said backing disc.
- A rotor of the above mentioned type is known from DE-C 968 553, which describes a closed rotor for centrifugal fans in which a flat rim connected to the other edges of the blades is formed by bending the free end of each blade and connecting said bent extension to the next blade. The inner edge of each blade is provided with a securing flange, bent at right angle to the surface of the blade and connected to a backing disc, made of sheet metal, the central portion of which is connected to the rotor hub. The manufacture of said rotor would require, besides the stamping of the blades and the shearing of the backing disc, a further operation for straightening out the sheared disc, which has to be made by skilled labour.
- US-A-1 437 610 discloses a rotor for centrifugal compressors and fans in which each blade is made of sheet metal and is provided with a securing flange for connection to a circular web formed by machining in one piece with the hub. Said rotor is much heavier and expensive to produce than a rotor having a backing disc made of sheet metal and interposed between the blades and a flange of the hub.
- The object of the invention is to provide a light rotor of the type specified above, which requires a smaller number of parts for its manufacture than is required for the manufacture of the rotor according to DE-C-968 583, so as to render it simpler and cheaper to manufacture.
- In order to achieve this object, the rotor accord- - ing to the present invention is characterised in that each blade is provided with an integral appendage extending at right angle from said edge to the next blade and having two side edges with a circular profile concentric with the axis of rotation of the rotor, an end edge and a stepped portion close to the respective blade, the end portion of the appendage of each blade is located beneath the stepped portion of the appendage of an adjacent blade, whereby the assemblage of appendages constitute said centrally bored backing disc, and th- stepped portion of each appendage is connected to the underlying end portion of the appendage of the adjacent blade and to the flange of the hub.
- The advantages of the rotor according to the present invention with respect to the rotor according to DE-C-968 553 reside in that a smaller number of parts is required for its manufacture and in that the manufacture of the rotor requires less skilled labour and is therefore cheaper.
- Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which:
- Figure 1 is a plan view of a rotor for centrifugal compressors or fans,
- Figure 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of Figure 1,
- Figure 3 is a section taken on the line III-III of Figure 1,
- Figure 4 is a perspective view of a blade of the rotor, and
- Figure 5 is a perspective view of the rotor - illustrated in Figures 1 to 4.
- In the example illustrated the rotor blades, indicated 1, are cylindrical with generatrices parallel to the axis of rotation.
- As its root, each of the blades 1 has an
integral appendage 2 lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation. - The
appendage 2 is conveniently formed in one piece with the respective blade 1 by pressing from sheet metal. - The
appendage 2 has twoside edges 2a, 2b with circular profiles concentric with the axis of rotation, and anend edge 2c having a concave profile with a curvature equal to that of the blades 1. - The
appendage 2 has a raisedpart 3 close to the root of the respective blade 1. - The
appendage 2 also has a series ofholes 4 close to theend edge 2c and a series ofholes 5 in correspondence with its raisedpart 3. - During assembly of the rotor, that part of each
appendage 2 adjacent theend edge 2c is located beneath theraised part 3 of the appendage of the blade adjacent thereto. - The rotor hub, indicated 6, is provided with a
flange 7 having a ring ofholes 8. The appendages of two adjacent blades are connected together by rivets 9 which pass through theholes innermost holes holes 8 in theflange 7 of thehub 6, thus connecting the blades to the hub without the need for intermediate elements. - More particularly, in the case of rotors of the semi-closed type illustrated in the drawings, there is no need to use a disc to which, in the prior art, the blades are fixed and which is fixed in its turn to the flange of the hub.
- The
appendages 2 integral with the blades 1 in the rotor according to the present invention also fulfil the function of a disc for partly closing the rotor. - In the case of rotors of the closed type, it is possible to fix, for example by welding, a disc 11 with a centrally-flared aperture, such as that illustrated in Figure 2, to the
edges 2d of the blades 1 opposite the roots. - According to a variant not illustrated, a rotor of the closed type could be formed by providing each blade with an integral appendage located at the opposite end to the root and lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation, for connecting together the appendages of adjacent blades in order to fulfil the function of the apertured disc indicated 11 in Figure 2.
- The connection between the
appendages 2 of the blades 1 and theflange 7 of thehub 6 could be achieved by bolts or other connecting means which allow easy replacement of the blades in the event of breakage thereof during operation of the rotor, instead of by rivets. - Alternatively, the said connection could be achieved by welding.
