Abstract

1. Device for supporting a product cast in a continuous casting plant comprising an ingot mould limited by two large sides and two small sides for shaping a product of rectangular cross-section, consisting of a liquid core (1) surrounded by a solidified crust (2) and means for moving the small sides of the ingot mould to modify the width of the product in the course of casting, the level of liquid metal in the ingot mould and, consequently, the ferrostatic pressure at each point remaining constant throughout the operation, and a device for supporting the product at the exit of the ingot mould, comprising four plates (4) and (3) for supporting the large and the small sides of the product respectively, and means for applying the said supporting plates (4) and (3) against the sides of the product, while being supported on a stationary frame (6), characterized in that the means for applying the plates (3) for supporting the small sides consist, in the case of each plate, of at least one double-acting jack (5) supported by the stationary frame and comprising two entries (7) to which there is applied a same single pressure of fluid remaining constant throughout the process of change and determined as a function of the height of the liquid column at this point and of the surface of the supported small side, so that the supporting plate (3) is maintained applied against the product with a force which is just sufficient to balance the ferrostatic pressure, and moves under the action of the solidified crust, following the movement of the small sides of the ingot mould.
